A girl or boy to suit any whim
Independent | Submitted by: Dirty Sammy
"In Svay Pak, business is conducted quite brazenly. Twenty brothels, each sealed by a padlocked iron grille, line the potholed dirt track that is the shanty town's main street. Step inside any of the brick shopfronts and the papasan (pimp) will produce a girl or boy to suit any whim. Oral sex costs $5; $500 buys a six-year-old for a week."

Germans still immune to Irony
BBC | Submitted by: Tobermory
German Democracy in action: "In a case which critics say has major implications for freedom of speech on the internet, Holger Voss stands accused of 'glorification of a criminal act'. Mr Voss, who will appear in court in the western German town of Muenster on Wednesday, insists his comments (regarding 9/11) were meant to be sarcastic... 'The court will decide whether he did indeed mean them ironically, and if so, whether or not that makes any difference,' (said) court spokesman Juergen Wrobel." It's amazing that such a sentence can even be considered for prosecution.

Homeland Security to have "Privacy Officer"
PC World | Submitted by: Squeak, The Human Chew Toy
"Olson dismissed concerns from published reports that the new draft cuts out a recommendation to consult with civil liberties groups over privacy issues. The working draft of the cybersecurity plan strengthens its privacy protections by creating a privacy officer in the Department of Homeland Security and making privacy a "common thread" throughout the document instead of just one recommendation, she said." Well, I feel better already. Speak clearly (into the lamp).

It paints a picture of a crippled nation, with roads, bridges and railroads shattered, the electricity grid badly damaged and oil industry paralysed. Nobody knows where this report came from.

If the Sopranos ran the Better Business Bureau
North Jersey Media | Submitted by: Shivananda
Yes, business IS done a bit differently in New Jersey. After numerous longstanding complaints that they never answered their phone or returned calls, the North Jersey chapter of the Better Business Bureau has just been expelled from the BBB for "bad business practices." The article notes that consumers were virtually unable to get through to anyone at the NJ office, which "grew out of a bitter territorial struggle between a Newark-based chapter that served Essex, Hudson, and Union counties, plus parts of Morris and Warren counties, and the long-established Paramus-based chapter that covered Bergen, Passaic, and Rockland counties." And you thought the waste removal business was tough!

Russian scientist Alexander Bolonkin develops artificial intelligence in the USA. The he "applies" it: "Let us imagine a state with a dictator at the head. A dictator would never be able to find efficient solutions for external and internal state problems. A dictator has ministries, which are then divided into divisions and departments. This forms a pyramid, in which all departments have their own databases, as well as the access to the common base. All divisions are busy with their particular problems, in accordance with the dictator’s ideology."
