AIDS sufferer beatdown after peeing in well
All Africa | Submitted by: f00f
"Recently, he was caught by some people urinating in the public well vowing that he should not die alone. Sulayiti was suffering from advanced AIDS and was pathetically emaciated. He was quite sure that the disease could also be transmitted through water... When the people asked him why he was urinating in the well, he had a simple answer for them. "Eh, why should I die alone, did I buy AIDS? I also got it accidentally either through reckless sex or from my marriage partner. So let others also share it."

More on German cannibals and planted stories
ZDF | Submitted by: anonymous
This is a followup to the article we posted on "Allegations of Satanistic cannibalism in Germany", which we suggested was a plant. The submitter here, though, suggests that ZDF being one of the state-owned TV broadcasters in Germany, if they are reporting this story how could it be a plant? We don't feel that would make it any less a planted story. After all, the previous planted story, involved a "state-owned" agency of London, the Metropolitan Police, and it demonstrably proven to be a plant. Anyway, some fantastic illustrations in this one.

Candidate Lieberman is a spammer
c|Net | Submitted by: Soylent
"Ironically, Lieberman has tried to position himself as an antispam politician. "Spam is a tremendous nuisance," Lieberman proclaimed when announcing his support for the "CAN-SPAM" legislation in May 2000. "It is not requested by the receiver. It almost never contains any information of substance or value... It is costly, destructive, and an invasion of our privacy." He got that right. But now, hypocritically, Lieberman thinks it's fine to invade our privacy: as long if he's the one doing it."

Dateline NBC examines Jacko's face
Wire Services | Submitted by: bacillus
"The face of pop singer Michael Jackson will be the subject of a special edition of NBC's news magazine Dateline next month. In announcing the program to television critics last week, NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker said 'Dateline' can encompass a variety of stories in its three hours each week. The series can 'run the gamut from important, serious shows like Tom Brokaw's fantastic hour on Iraq to ridiculous but fascinating hours on Michael Jackson's face,' Zucker told the Television Critics Association."

Rumors help Polio make a comeback in Asia
New York Times | Submitted by: kade
"Mrs. Jahan had heard the story circulating through her Muslim neighborhood that the polio vaccine would make her child sterile. She believed it. So even though her daughter, Uzma, still needed two doses of the vaccine, Mrs. Jahan would not take her to the immunization booth. [Her daughter did not get vaccinated]... Three months ago, Uzma came down with a fever. Then the paralysis, polio's calling card, set in. Today the once playful 4 year old cannot stand without help."

Credit Card tells you when you're too drunk
Guardian | Submitted by: kade
"When breathed on, the [credit] card will change colour to show different levels of alcohol intake. Its use as a sobriety test in Tesco supermarkets may reduce the stores' takings at the checkout. But the chain is hoping that its scope as a do it yourself breathalyser will lead more people to apply for it."

Serial Killer Sweepstakes!
BBC | Submitted by: Tobermory
Bringing audience participation to new heights: "Manchester station Key 103 ran the sweepstake on the day the convicted murderer (Myra Hindley) was given last rites in hospital. Listeners were invited to guess the time of her death, with the closest receiving UKP 500... "It captured something of the mood of the audience, providing our listeners with the opportunity to express their often very impassioned views about Miss Hindley." And something of their desire to make money.

Great void vexes Minnesotans
ABC News | Submitted by: Tyrona
"Smack in the middle of North Long Lake, surrounded by eight miles of ice thick enough to drive on, there is a gaping black hole nearly a half-mile long. It is a lake within a frozen lake, a huge crescent of open water that, for some reason, refuses to freeze over."

Hootenanny in the neighborhood
Wire Services | Submitted by: Tanya Hunter
"A few days after Christmas, a zoo official carrying a large net and a snare knocked on her door. "And he said, 'I just wanted to let you know I'm going to be out front trying to catch this injured owl,'" Andersen said. "I just broke out laughing. I told him it was a fake owl." She bought the owl at Wal-Mart two years ago for $14.99. Maybe it also knows how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop.

"The Swedish businessman Kent Ajland says a group of South African private investigators had identified a South African agent now living outside the country as Palme's killer, the Stockholm daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported... Scot admiral conceived chemical warfare in 1805
The Herald | Submitted by: Son of Benway
"Fife born Sir Thomas Cochrane, whom Napoleon named the Sea Wolf, devised a secret plan to end the Napoleonic Wars by sending clouds of deadly sulphur dioxide into French ports... Dissolved in water, sulphur dioxide makes sulphuric acid, and when breathed-in the gas mixes with the moisture in the lungs and throat, fatally bathing the internal organs with corrosive vitriol. But Sir Thomas' idea was vetoed by the British admiralty, who saw the plan as "inhumane" and, more significantly, were terrified that the French would use the same tactics to attack Britain."

Magnets and You!
Boston Globe | Submitted by: anonymous
"Invented in 1985, modern-day magnetic stimulators charge up to a whopping 3,000 volts and produce peak currents of up to 8,000 amps - powers similar to those of a small nuclear reactor." What does all that juice do? "He can disrupt your working memory or your ability to recognize faces. He can even make it harder for you to say verbs while nouns remain as easy as ever." I hate verbs.

Bin Laden vs UFO
Mirror | Submitted by: Cornsmut
When half a dozen witnesses to the crash of flight 93 in Pennsylvania on 9/11 reported seeing an unknown type of military aircraft stalking the jetliner, the Govt said it was a civilian Fairchild Falcon 20. But what about the sonic boom recorded at 9.22am by a USGS station near the crash site? And why would a one-ton section of the engine and other debris land up to 8 miles away from the impact site (with only a 10 mph breeze) if flight 93 hadn't been shot in the air? Can anyone say Aurora?

Russia run by stunted House-Elf
BBC | Submitted by: Tobermory
"Dobby the house-elf (of Harry Potter fame) could be taken to court because some people think he looks like the Russian president... They are angry because they think the filmmakers deliberately modelled Dobby on the face of Russia's boss, Vladimir Putin... Dobby... is not the most attractive of characters. He's a funny green colour, skinny and has massive ears." Yes, but can he defeat the Chechens?

Council considers DIY brothels
Sydney Morning Herald | Submitted by: Crush Crush
"Under a controversial plan in front of Marrickville Council next month, prostitutes in the area will no longer have to apply for development consent if they want to work from home. South Sydney is the only council to have made such a change, which is aimed at gaining tighter control over the largely invisible industry." It is really sad that parts of Australia are so progressive in an area such as this, yet so repressive when it comes to freedom of speech issues.

Denver Post | Submitted by: JOPY - 666
"A woman who played police officer for two hours in a stolen Loveland cruiser Saturday night wasn't wearing a gun or a badge. Or a shirt. But police said that didn't stop 22-year-old Amanda Briles - who has a lengthy arrest record, from pulling at least two people over and giving them verbal warnings."

Libya elected to chair U.N. human rights body
Wire Services | Submitted by: UncleGum
"Libya, under fire for years from human rights activists, was overwhelmingly elected Monday to chair the top United Nations' rights body after the United States broke with tradition and forced a vote... Various U.N. rights committees have expressed concern at reports of torture, prolonged detention and extrajudicial killings in Libya where the unpredictable Gaddafi has governed since taking power in a 1969 coup." This is almost as great as Kissinger winning the Nobel Peace Prize for the secret bombing of Cambodia!

America's ultra-secret weapon
Time | Submitted by: UncleGum
"Every war has its wonder weapon. In Afghanistan, it was the Predator, the unmanned drone that would loiter, invisibly, over the battlefield before unleashing a Hellfire missile on an unsuspecting target. The Gulf War marked the debut of precision-guided munitions, and in Vietnam helicopters came of age. World War II gave us the horror of nuclear weapons, and World War I introduced the tank. If there's a second Gulf War, get ready to meet the high power microwave."

Satanic ritual abuse? Nah. Just an abortion
World Net Daily | Submitted by: Snoggeramus
This is an anti-abortion tainted article, but... "As the detective explained, a local photo-finishing store had called police to report that Traywick had apparently beheaded and mutilated a newborn baby and had taken pictures of the infant. The SWAT team had come out in force, prepared to arrest satanic cult members, baby killers who had carried out a ritualistic mutilation connected with some Satan-worship ceremony, and who had the further audacity to photograph their victims." With link to great headless baby photo.

Sex offense excused by language barrier
Aftenposten | Submitted by: anonymous
"The court ruled that the woman with Williams Syndrome did not have the necessary psychological strength to resist the man's desire for sex. One characteristic is overly friendly and polite behavior and a desire to contact strangers. The man's comprehension of the Norwegian language was worse than that expected of someone resident since 1990 and could not rule out that his age (a 22-year-old), cultural background and immaturity could have contributed to the assault." He could have been an American.

Commercials at movies suck
Washington Times | Submitted by: j trotter
"[Advertisers] are looking for places they can reach a captive audience and stretch their advertising dollars," said Laura Adler, vice president of marketing for the National Cinema Network, a theater advertising-services provider that represents nearly 8,000 screens in theater chains like AMC... But movie audiences that have shelled out close to $10 for a ticket don't necessarily like to be held captive to ads."
