Cannibal auditioned his entrees
Independent Online | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"A man in Germany charged with killing and eating a gay man he met in an Internet chat room had previously 'auditioned' four other potential victims, according to a magazine report. The report in Thursday's Stern quotes investigators as saying the four 'cannibalism candidates' agreed to be subjected to a physical suitability examination by their prospective killer. ... Three of the men baulked at going through with being eaten, saying they had assumed it was an erotic role-playing game. The fourth man was rejected as 'pudgy and unsexy' by the killer."

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star | Submitted by: Dylan Forrester
"A Baltimore acoustic artist has been banned from playing the Fredericksburg Borders Books & Music store -- apparently because she made fun of President Bush's legs... Julia Rose, a singer-songwriter and a fitness advocate who often shows audiences her six-pack abs, told a Fredericksburg Borders audience Friday: 'George Bush has chicken legs. He needs to pump some iron.' ... 'I never said anything about Bush being a bad president or anything. I was just poking fun at his scrawny frame.'" [Well, now you know better.]

Conspiracy theories fill US credibility gap in Baghdad
Hindustan Times | Submitted by: Crazy Quagga
"The deaths of Uday and Qusay, whose names became bywords for the cruelty of the ousted regime, was, to many, the ultimate proof of a secret pact between the United States and Saddam. ... Baghdad today is rife with conspiracy theories as people ooze a palpable sense of defeat. ... Hindi shows off the front page of the Islamist newspaper, Iraqi Life, which carries a story about an alleged phone conversation between US President George W. Bush and Saddam just hours before US air strikes rang in the war on March 20. Bush tells Saddam: 'You are to obey what our agent in Baghdad tells you. Keep holding military meetings and appearing on TV. You must not worry, our agent in Baghdad will get you out safe. Have all your belongings packed.'"

Ashcroft intentionally fucked the Moussaoui trial
Slate | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The trial of so-called '20th hijacker' Zacarias Moussaoui has been hamstrung by a Justice Department that seemingly wanted one prosecution to serve half a dozen irreconcilable ends. With a single deft trial, Attorney General John Ashcroft had hoped to avenge the evil of Sept. 11 for all Americans, while showcasing the even-handedness of the American justice system for the rest of the world. ... But as this prosecution unravels, indecision on the part of the Justice Department reveals nothing less than the government's own lack of faith in the courts. ... Because the government simply refuses to produce the witness as required under the Sixth Amendment, Judge Brinkema will impose sanctions next week that could range from striking counts from the indictment, removing the possibility of the death penalty, or dismissing the case altogether."

Secret "no-fly" list completely unmonitored
SFGate.com | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The government has no idea how many air travelers are being subjected to delays and missed flights because of confusion over security watchlists, according to interviews and internal Transportation Security Administration documents. ...The internal documents were obtained via the Freedom of Information Act by the American Civil Liberties Union, which is trying to persuade a federal judge to order the government to disclose who is on the watchlists, how people get on them and how somebody can get off them. Citing national security, the TSA has refused to answer these questions, which the ACLU posed in an effort to learn whether passengers are being placed on watchlists because of their political beliefs."

Fingers crossed for dog-composting project
Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune | Submitted by: nordridge
"The idea began three years ago, when Ernie Price of the Seneca Soil and Water Conservation District (SSWD) proposed composting euthanized dogs. With more and more restrictions for organic material in landfills, McKinney wanted to pursue it. 'Just running the crematory cost me $10,000 a year for LP gas,' McKinney said. 'Also, I should save 400-500 man-hours a year. I only handle the animals one time instead of four.' ... 'We had experience with livestock farmers doing mortality composting,' Fritz said. ... 'We weren't sure that dogs and hogs would react the same, but we think they will.'"

Police and several witnesses said he placed a sick kitten in a plastic bag, put it in a freezer, then whacked it against a trash bin until it was dead. UC Berkeley: conservatives aren't stupid, exactly
berkeley.edu | Submitted by: Crazy Quagga
"The researchers said that conservative ideologies, like virtually all belief systems, develop in part because they satisfy some psychological needs, but that 'does not mean that conservatism is pathological or that conservative beliefs are necessarily false, irrational, or unprincipled.' They also stressed that their findings are not judgmental. ... Although they concluded that conservatives are less 'integratively complex' than others are, Glaser said, 'it doesn't mean that they're simple-minded.' Conservatives don't feel the need to jump through complex, intellectual hoops in order to understand or justify some of their positions, he said." [Now, why would that sound judgmental?]

Spectator | Submitted by: Tobermory
"If you are looking for some fun, and have a research grant to spend, try this. Visit an American university, bump into random students in the corridor and loudly call each one 'asshole.' Then measure their reactions. This is what a team of psychologists did in a controlled experiment at the University of Michigan. ... Students from the southern part of the United States reacted far more violently and aggressively than those from the North, were shown to have much higher levels of cortisone and testosterone, and in tests regularly suggested more belligerent solutions to problems."

Post 9-11 security expo lots of fun
Washington Post | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Last year's Government Security Expo and Conference (mostly high tech) show was so successful with 175 exhibitors, organizers said, that they expanded it and added the 'U.S. Law Enforcement' show with its somewhat more nitty-gritty exhibits for the 'gun and badge' folks. ... [For instance:] Grant Haber, president of American Innovations Inc., a firm that makes bomb-resistant waste receptacles, said 'our nation's security infrastructure has been compromised' because the exact specs of many such trash cans have been revealed on the Web, a boon to terrorists. 'It's sickening,' he said, adding that he keeps his specs secret except from potential buyers."
