"A nurse in Cameroon has been sentenced to death by a firing squad for deliberately injecting two of her lover's children with HIV and Hepatitis B contaminated blood. The High Court in Nkongsamba convicted Yango Huguette Laure of attempted murder. The judgement in the high profile trial has been welcomed by most Cameroonians. The judge concluded that by injecting the two children, 11 and 15-years old, with the contaminated blood, Laure wanted revenge on their father, who she claimed broke a promise to marry her."

FBI snags Limey missile smugglers

"The FBI has arrested a British man as part of an international sting operation involving an alleged plot to smuggle shoulder-fired missiles into the United States, authorities said Tuesday. ... The man was arrested after agreeing to sell a sophisticated Russian SA-18 Igla missile to an undercover FBI agent posing as a Muslim extremist, according to a federal law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The understanding between the man and the undercover agent was that the missile needed to be capable of bringing down a commercial airliner, the official said."

"A Dalit woman and her 18-year-old daughter were paraded naked in a village in Bihar and mercilessly beaten after being accused of practising witchcraft, police officials said. ... About 50 villagers attacked the duo, accusing them of having caused the murder of a woman called Tulsi Manjhi in the village of Nawadih through witchcraft. ... Instances of Dalits being harassed in the name of witchcraft are on the rise in Bihar. Last month two alleged witches were forced to consume human excreta in separate cases of harassment by villagers."

"Houston police say they have cracked a rather bizarre case. They have arrested a transgender they say injected other transgenders with what was supposed to be pure silicone. ... Twenty-two-year-old Delfino Gonzales died of asphyxiation just three days after being injected in May with a substance authorities now believe was brake fluid. It's an incredibly dangerous procedure transgenders are enduring instead of paying for much more expensive plastic surgery."

The rap star allegedly baited a 17-year-old girl and her friend to bare their breasts in front of a Girls Gone Wild camera crew by offering her drugs during filming at Mardi Gras in February 2002, according to an affidavit in Bay County, Fla. ... Shots of the breast-baring Capdeboscq and Candiotto flanking Snoop appear on the cover of the Girls Gone Wild: Doggy Style video and DVD. The two women have since sued Snoop, Francis and the Girls Gone Wild franchise in federal court for improperly using their images, which also appear in TV and Internet ads."

Parkinson's drug may induce compulsive gambling

"Excessive gambling could be an unfortunate yet rare side effect in Parkinson's patients who take certain dopamine agonists, according to a study in the August 12 issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology. ... The patients were taking pramipexole or pergolide anywhere from six to 64 months before the onset of gambling, and seven patients started gambling within one month of an increased dosage of the dopamine agonist. None of them had a previous history of gambling. The gambling behavior was severe enough to cause financial problems, and two patients had losses more than $60,000. After a family member or caregiver noticed substantial financial loss, the patients' treatment regimen was changed."

"Half a century ago, L. Ron Hubbard produced some of his earliest writings on Dianetics in Wichita. Now the Church of Scientology, which Hubbard founded, is seeking those papers. Church officials, who are offering a $5,000 reward, hope they might be tucked away in a Wichita attic or basement. ... The ad in Monday's paper said that Hubbard, the author of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, lived at 910 N. Yale in 1951 and 1952. ... An Eagle story in March 1995 indicated that by 1952, Hubbard was seeking to leave Wichita. His second marriage had ended in divorce, and his company had gone bankrupt."

Feds developing system to track every piece of mail

"A government report that urges the U.S. Postal Service to create 'smart stamps' to track the identity of people who send mail is eliciting concern from privacy advocates. ... Though details remain sketchy, an intelligent mail system would involve using barcodes or special stamps, identifying, at a minimum, the sender, the destination and the class of mail. ... [EPIC] questioned the cost and effectiveness of a system that hinges on proving the identity of millions of individual mail senders. Even an overhaul of the entire postal system may not thwart stamp-swipers and identity thieves, they said. 'In order to close those holes, you have to move toward a police state.'" [When anonymous stamps are outlawed, only outlaws will have anonymous stamps.]
