Mother sentenced for pimping young daughters
WNBC-TV 4 New York | Submitted by: Cupcake
"The prostitute who provided her pre-teen daughter and niece to then-Waterbury Mayor Phil Giordano for sex was sentenced Friday to 10 years in federal prison. 'I can't conceive of anything more horrible that a mother could do to her child,' U.S. District Court Judge Alan Nevas said in passing sentence. The woman could have received up to 20 years under federal guidelines on charges that she conspired with Giordano to entice the girls, who were 8 and 10, into performing oral sex on the mayor at various times between November 2000 and July 2001."

Existence proof of inadequate airport security
CNN | Submitted by: jimbo
"A 20-year-old North Carolina student has admitted placing box cutters and other suspicious materials aboard two Southwest Airlines planes, law enforcement sources told CNN Friday... The sources said the individual -- described as a male student of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina -- was a passenger aboard the planes, and not an employee of the airline or airports. They said the individual is cooperating with officials, and they stressed he has not been arrested or detained... The items found aboard the two planes included box cutters, clay that resembled plastic explosives and bleach, sources familiar with the investigation said. The liquid was contained in suntan lotion bottles; the clay was inside Play-Doh containers."

Al Qaeda nothing if not persistent
canada.com | Submitted by: Gorg
"A key al-Qaida terrorism suspect was looking for nuclear material for a 'dirty bomb' at McMaster University in Hamilton, the Washington Times reported Friday. Adnan El Shukrijumah is being sought by the FBI and CIA in connection with a plot to detonate a dirty bomb - a conventional explosive laced with radioactive material."

Finland, EU edging closer to Big Brother
CNN | Submitted by: jimbo
"Finland has proposed a new law that would let parents track the movements of their young children via mobile phone, even without their consent, in a move that could set an EU benchmark in privacy and handset use... 'Roughly similar legislation will be a reality in the European Union area in the near future,' said Juhapekka Ristola, an official at the transport and communications ministry... According to the draft, individuals aged 15 or older could only be tracked after giving their consent, but for children under 15 such consent could also be given by their parents or guardians. In emergency situations people can still be tracked without their consent regardless of their age."

"Catering workers at a summit in Thailand are being forced to submit to rectal swabs - to determine if they are disease-free... Chefs and waiters at the 16 hotels hosting world leaders attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit have undergone the checks to ensure they are not infected with typhoid or other parasites."

The world of anti-abortion terrorists
searchlightmagazine.com | Submitted by: Tobermory
"The violent wing of the transnational anti-abortion movement was galvanised to feverish life in recent months by a succession of dramatic events here in the United States that brought the threat of faith-based domestic terrorism back to the front page. In March James Kopp was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his 1998 sniper murder of Dr Barnet Slepian, an abortion provider, at his home in Buffalo, New York. Kopp is also charged or suspected in six other sniper-style attacks dating back to 1994 on doctors in Canada and the United States that left three seriously wounded. All the victims either were Jewish or had Jewish names."

South Africans wondering about snuff movies
News 24 South Africa | Submitted by: HawaiianAtheist
"Shocked by reports of the alleged filming of the rape and murder of a Johannesburg woman, many South Africans are asking: are snuff movies real or merely an urban legend? Interviewed this week, experts in a range of disciplines simply did not know... An answer to the question seems as elusive as the film said to have been made of 18-year-old Tanya Flowerday's rape and murder in June. 'To date, we have found no movie,' said police spokesperson Inspector Amanda Roestoff. If claims were true that Flowerday's violent end was taped by her killers with the aim of selling the tape, this would be the first known such case in South Africa."

Girl miraculously survives bathtub massacre
Dallas Observer | Submitted by: Diego Knyte
"In the early morning of May 31, 1990, a swarm of Jamaican gangsters pushed their way into a second-story crack house where five teens, ranging in age from 13 to 19, were hanging out, smoking weed and drinking beer. The Jamaicans would later call it a robbery gone bad, a turf thing; it turned into an execution. The gangsters, armed with semiautomatic weapons, forced the kids to strip naked and squeeze into a dirty bathtub. One thug turned on the faucet. Two others faced the tub, weapons poised... There was no earthly way to dodge the bullets, huge .45s fired from just a few feet away. The teens wilted into the water swirling with their blood. But one girl escaped."

Pentagon's form letter author also press darling
Antiwar | Submitted by: optional
"As we pull, and tug at the spam propaganda story - those fake 'good news' letters from Iraq sent out to 500 newspapers, signed by different soldiers - the whole fabric of this odd little episode begins to come apart, revealing a whole other layer underneath. The Pentagon, the local commanders, everyone disclaimed any knowledge of this 'good news' factory, and it was only a coincidence that the President had just launched a major public relations blitz designed to shore up support for the war. The official story, up until recently, was that a single individual soldier had taken it upon himself to write and circulate the letter, but, as it turned out, this wasn't just any grunt: it was Lt. Col. Dominic Caraccilo, who is, by any measure, far from ordinary... He is not only a published author and editor, but is also, perhaps, the single most cited soldier in press accounts of the war, as a Google search reveals. Wherever there is a question to be answered, a rationale to articulate, a 'good news' perspective to be given on some unfolding disaster, Lt. Col. Caraccilo is at the media's service."

Senate opts not to bone Cheney
Casper Star Tribune | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The Senate rejected efforts on Tuesday to keep Vice President Dick Cheney from collecting $500,000 that he is scheduled to receive from Halliburton Corp. this year. By a vote of 65 to 34, the Senate voted to set aside an amendment that would have prevented Cheney, who led the Houston-based energy firm from 1995 to 2000, from receiving the deferred compensation. It also would have forced the former Wyoming congressman to sell 400,000 options to buy stock in the firm."

Mormons confronted with endless stream of 'sex'
KUTV-TV 2 Salt Lake City | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"With millions of the faithful around the world listening to broadcasts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' General Conference in October, church Apostle M. Russell Ballard preached forcefully about Satan's threat to families and warned of the 'pernicious evil' of the entertainment media. Meanwhile, 225 miles to the south of the church's Salt Lake City headquarters, a Cedar City radio station airing conference coverage on a 24-second delay froze up just as Ballard reached the word 'sex' in his sermon. For 24 seconds, the electronically stalled Ballard said: 'Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex...'"

3 years later, Feds admit improper prosecution
CNET News.com | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Federal prosecutors asked a San Francisco appeals court this week to reverse a computer-crime conviction that punished a California man for notifying a company's customers of a flaw in the company's e-mail service. Filed on Tuesday in San Francisco's Ninth District Court of Appeals, the unusual request conceded that federal prosecutors in Los Angeles erred in bringing a criminal case against, and obtaining the conviction of, 30-year-old Bret McDanel... 'The government concedes that the evidence did not establish an intent to "damage" within the meaning of the statute (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act), and requests that this Court reverse the defendant's conviction,' Ronald Cheng, assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, stated in the filing... The original conviction by U.S. District Judge Lourdes G. Baird determined that, by revealing a flaw in a system's security, a researcher could be accused of harming the system, a violation of computer crime laws. Cheng's statement acknowledges that such a reading should not be valid."

Blair Witch dickheads destroying historic church
WTOP-FM Washington, D.C. | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The Ceres Bethel AME Church, built in 1870 by freed slaves, is a part of the area's black culture long ignored by mainstream historians... Now it attracts late-night partygoers, thrill-seekers and movie devotees who have splashed the interior with graffiti, smashed the altar, repeatedly torn protective plywood off the doors and windows, and littered the inside with beer cans, candles and even an Ouija board... [Not a Ouija board!] The fact that it is a church gives it a certain twisted cachet for those seeking to summon spirits and witches. Convinced that the church was used by Satan worshippers after the film came out, Dyson held a nighttime ceremony in 1999 to expel lingering evil spirits. He found an Ouija board, he said, and drug paraphernalia."
