Mexican millionaires raping, slaughtering women
observer.guardian.co.uk | Submitted by: Otis Criblecross
"Ciudad Juarez is known as 'the city of the dead girls'. In 10 years almost 400 women have been murdered in this city on the border between Mexico and El Paso, Texas, and the killings continue... more than a third of the women were raped before death. Most victims are tortured and mutilated. Sometimes the killer leaves a signature; a breast or a nipple is sliced off. The bodies are then dumped in wasteland... 'Five men from Juarez and one from Tijuana who get together and kill women in what can only be described as blood sport. Some of those involved are prominent men with important political connections - untouchables.' [Newspaper journalist Diana Washington Valdez] alleges at least 100 women have been killed by these men, of whom all but one are multi-millionaires. They have political connections going all the way to President Vicente Fox, and some have allegedly made contributions to Fox's presidential campaign."

Castro disses Schwarzenegger
Yahoo! UK | Submitted by: faerie
"Cuban President Fidel Castro has praised California Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger's muscles but wonders how much brain power the former Mr. Universe has. 'To judge from the photographs, he has a lot of muscle, but they have not tested him to see how much muscle he has in the brain,' the bearded revolutionary quipped during a five-hour speech on Friday evening closing a Latin American social sciences conference. 'He way well have more force in the arms than in the brain.'"

New Delhi up to asses in monkeys
Wire Services | Submitted by: Jim Jones
"In a capital city where cows roam the streets and elephants plod along in the bus lanes, it's no surprise to find government buildings overrun with monkeys. But the officials who work there are fed up. They've been bitten, robbed and otherwise tormented by monkeys that ransack files, bring down power lines, screech at visitors and bang on office windows... Last year the monkeys made their presence felt by hanging from window ledges and screeching at reporters arriving for a news conference with visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld."

Nudist restaurant opens in Key West
Miami Herald | Submitted by: Juan Motaim
"The debut of Naked Lunch highlights the growing demand for spots that cater to nude heterosexuals. Garden of Eden is well known for it. Atlantic Shores, once an exclusively gay resort, now welcomes straight clothes-shedders to its clothing-optional pool and grill... But Naked Lunch might claim bragging rights as the country's first stand-alone clothing-optional restaurant. Many nudist resorts have restaurants where people can take it all off, but neither the International Naturists Association nor the American Association for Nude Recreation knows of another clothing-optional restaurant smack dab in the middle of a city."

Bush unhurt by hysterical woman driver
Chicago Sun-Times | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"A woman said to have 'snapped' from stress drove her car with three children inside past a police checkpoint Saturday and rammed it into an arena where President Bush had given a speech. Bush was unharmed and authorities said later she had never intended to hurt the president. Authorities swarmed the car with weapons drawn and took away the driver and her children. Secret Service and local law enforcement investigators concluded after interviewing her that she had no intention of harming the president, said Ann Roman, a Secret Service spokeswoman. A law enforcement official identified the driver as Betina Mixon, 29, of Horn Lake. Mixon, a nurse's aide and the mother of three sons, had been under stress recently because of marital problems and a hysterectomy, said her friend Amy Graves, of Walls."

Military opens hugemongous, hi-tech mortuary
delmarvanow.com | Submitted by: Otis Criblecross
"A new, $30 million military mortuary was dedicated at Dover Air Force Base on Monday, a gleaming, brightly lit, state-of-the-art facility... The 70,000 square-foot Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs is about twice the size of its predecessor... A safe room where remains are scanned for unexploded ordnance has foot-thick concrete walls and blast-proof doors and windows that can withstand the force of half a pound of C-4 explosive. At the old mortuary, workers had to be evacuated as a safety precaution if unexploded ordnance was detected."

Death toll continues to climb in Iraq
CNN | Submitted by: smiling_horsecunt
"U.S. officials, responding to the deadliest day for U.S. troops in Iraq since President Bush declared the end of major combat on May 1, are vowing to finish the job and beat back insurgents. The high cost of that effort was made clear Sunday as 16 soldiers died when a U.S. Army transport helicopter went down west of Baghdad... The military death toll Sunday was second only to March 23, the day 29 American troops died in combat in and around the southern city of Nasiriya - 11 Army soldiers in the ambush of a convoy of the 507th Maintenance Company and 18 U.S. Marines in a battle on the outskirts of town. In Washington, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the people resisting the U.S.-led occupation and the establishment of a new government in Iraq are 'going to be beaten eventually.'"

Tank disabled by mystery weapon
armytimes.com | Submitted by: Otris Criblecross
"Shortly before dawn on Aug. 28, an M1A1 Abrams tank on routine patrol in Baghdad 'was hit by something' that crippled the 69-ton behemoth... According to an unclassified Army report, the mystery projectile punched through the vehicle's skirt and drilled a pencil-sized hole through the hull... Experts believe whatever it is that knocked out the tank in August was not an RPG-7 but most likely something new - and that worries tank drivers."

Smithsonian's lame attempt to downplay Enola Gay
AZ Central | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"When Smithsonian Institution officials unveiled a home for the World War II bomber Enola Gay in August, they had hoped to avoid the kind of controversy that had plagued efforts to exhibit the airplane that carried the first atomic bomb... Scholars, writers and activists have signed a petition criticizing the exhibit for labeling Enola Gay as 'the largest and most technologically advanced airplane for its time' without mentioning that it dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. 'You wouldn't display a slave ship solely as a model of technological advancement,' said David Nasaw, a cultural historian at the City University of New York Graduate Center and one of 100 petition signers. 'It would be offensive not to put it in context.'"

Rumsfeld unclear on mojo concept
Straits Times | Submitted by: kade
"Donald Rumsfeld says he does not know whether he has lost his mojo... 'Have you lost your mojo?' a reporter asked him during a Pentagon briefing. Mr Rumsfeld said he has not consulted a dictionary - as he did for words such as 'slog', about which he has sparred with reporters - but has spoken with an aide who had. 'And they asked me that, and I said, "I don't know what it means." And they said, "In 1926 or something, it had to do with jazz music."'

Coming soon: robo-sphincter
BBC | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"People with urinary incontinence could one day use a remote control to keep their bodily functions in check. Scientists in Australia say they are close to making replacement sphincters operable by remote control... A small electrical stimulator, similar to a heart pacemaker, is also implanted to give the user control over the muscle. The patient can then use a remote control to operate the muscle when they wish to go to the bathroom."
