Crocodile Hunter just another dumbshit
Melbourne Herald Sun | Submitted by: noxic
"Steve Irwin sparked outrage yesterday when he held his baby son a metre from the mouth of a crocodile at his Queensland zoo. Child advocates branded the Crocodile Hunter reckless for holding one-month-old Bob while feeding the giant crocodile a dead chicken... Irwin defended the stunt, saying the baby was never in danger. 'This kid has to grow up to be croc savvy,' he told the Herald Sun. 'I guess what I am doing is teaching him to be completely familiar with crocodiles.'" [Shut the fuck up. Just admit your lapse in judgment.]

Nuclear plant hijinks evocative of The Simpsons
Knoxville News-Sentinel | Submitted by: lovethebomb
"In a recent investigation, TVA's inspector general reported on an apparent hazing of a female contractor at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant near Chattanooga. The 'initiation' is a practice that is routine at the plants, the report by Inspector General Richard W. Moore stated... The contract employee was placed in an ice basket above the nuclear reactor while ice was being blown into the basket... Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, said the behavior involving the woman was 'unprofessional.' 'It's very inappropriate for people to be horsing around inside a nuclear reactor,' Smith said. 'That reeks of being dangerous. The ice cooling baskets are designed to be available in the event of danger, and they're up there goofing around. It doesn't build confidence that TVA is managing these very unforgiving machines.'"

French judge may indict Cheney
The Nation | Submitted by: A. P. Palled
"Yet another sordid chapter in the murky annals of Halliburton might well lead to the indictment of Dick Cheney by a French court on charges of bribery, money-laundering and misuse of corporate assets. At the heart of the matter is a $6 billion gas liquification factory built in Nigeria on behalf of oil mammoth Shell by Halliburton - the company Cheney headed before becoming Vice President - in partnership with a large French petroengineering company, Technip... three days before Christmas, the Paris daily Le Figaro front-paged the news that Judge van Ruymbeke had notified the Justice Ministry that Cheney might be among those eventually indicted as a result of his investigation. According to accounts in the French press, Judge van Ruymbeke believes that some or all of $180 million in so-called secret 'retrocommissions' paid by Halliburton and Technip were, in fact, bribes given to Nigerian officials and others to grease the wheels for the refinery's construction."

Wife dies during sex
wstm.com | Submitted by: optional
"Syracuse police officers charged Joseph Micale, 34, of 834 North State Street, with second-degree manslaughter for allegedly strangling his wife, Maureen, to death with a phone cord during a sex act. Police were called to Micale's north side apartment Tuesday after he called them, saying he had gotten into an argument with his wife, and when he returned later, found that she had hung herself. An autopsy determined the cause of death as asphyxiation, but investigators said evidence they collected at the scene did not match up with Micale's story. Sergeant Thomas Connellan, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Police Department, says Micale later admitted that he had wrapped the cord around Maureen's neck to enhance their lovemaking."

More snipers needed in Iraq
New York Times | Submitted by: rtype
"In an age of satellite-guided bombs dropped at featureless targets from 30,000 feet, Army snipers can see the expression on a man's face when the bullet hits. 'I shot one guy in the head, and his head exploded,' said Sgt. Randy Davis, one of about 40 snipers in the Army's new 3,600-soldier Stryker Brigade, from Fort Lewis, Wash. 'Usually, though, you just see a dust cloud pop up off their clothes, and see a little blood splatter come out the front.' ... As the counterinsurgency grinds into its ninth month, the Army is increasingly relying on snipers to protect infantry patrols sweeping through urban streets and alleyways, and to kill guerrilla leaders and disrupt their attacks... The demand for snipers is great enough that the Army has sent a team of trainers to Iraq to keep churning out new ones for the war effort here and in other hot spots."

French fries ruined by mad cow fears
Tri-City Herald | Submitted by: Rio
"More than $500,000 worth of french fries is being held in limbo at Northwest and Asian ports in an unexpected spin-off of the mad cow scare that is alarming one of the Mid-Columbia's biggest industries.. The concern comes because most fries are prefried in beef tallow or vegetable oil by the manufacturer before they are frozen and shipped. They are then fried again at the restaurant before being served. Other products that might experience delays could include animal hides, powdered milk and pet food."
