Cult leader on trial for pedophilia
wsbtv.com | Submitted by: optional
"Prosecutors began building a case Tuesday that [Malachi York] abused his power to feed his sexual appetite for boys and girls at his neo-Egyptian compound in rural central Georgia. The leader of the mostly black United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors faces 13 federal counts of child molestation and racketeering. The girl, the first alleged victim to testify at the trial, told of being forced to perform oral sex when she lived in a commune with York in upstate New York, and then being moved on to Georgia and more invasive sexual contact in 1993."

Civet cat extermination in progress
canada.com | Submitted by: Gorg
"By boiling and drowning, electrocution and incineration, civet cats went to their deaths in southern China on Tuesday in a mass eradication designed to stem a suspected - but unproven - link to SARS... The cull, in which authorities hope to slaughter 10,000 of the weasel-like mammals and their related brethren by Saturday, kicked into gear... Newspaper photos showed health workers in white protective suits, goggles, surgical masks and elbow-length rubber gloves drowning animals... Civets seized in Guangzhou were electrocuted and their bodies burned, said an employee of the city Hygiene Supervision Bureau. 'We first put them in disinfectant to sterilize them, then electrocute them, then burn them,' said the man, who wouldn't give his name. The Yangcheng Evening News gave readers a step-by-step illustrated account of how the civets, once killed, would be boiled for six hours until they 'turn to vapour' and become nothing but liquid dregs. In other areas, authorities were drowning civets and other animals by lowering them in cages into vats of water."

Long overdue scrutiny of USS Liberty incident
Jerusalem Post | Submitted by: A. P. Palled
"The State Department will cast a spotlight next week on the 1967 Israeli attack on the U.S. spy ship Liberty where 34 American servicemen were killed... Last October, a former U.S. Navy attorney who helped lead a military investigation into the incident said in a signed affidavit that then-President Lyndon Johnson and his defense secretary, Robert McNamara, ordered that the inquiry conclude the incident was an accident. Retired Capt. Ward Boston said Johnson and McNamara told those heading the Navy's inquiry to 'conclude that the attack was a case of "mistaken identity" despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.'"

Nickel-and-diming ourselves into a police state
Sydney Morning Herald | Submitted by: chefweeks
"A US demand for airline passengers to be banned from queuing for the toilet would need to be handled tactfully by Qantas, acting Prime Minister John Anderson said today. Mr Anderson, who is also transport minister, said the government had no plans to similarly ban toilet crowding on incoming flights to Australia. Qantas began informing passengers last night about the toilet queue ban but said it was too early yet to gauge customer reaction. 'The US Transport Security Administration are now requiring that passengers on flights to the US are not to congregate in groups in any areas of the aircraft, especially around the lavatories,' a Qantas spokeswoman said... Board of Airline Representatives of Australia executive director Warren Bennett described the US edict as silly and impossible to enforce. 'It's [a toilet] a very prime piece of real estate on an aircraft at certain times in the flight,' Mr Bennett told ABC radio. 'It's obvious that whoever thought this up in the US authority hasn't travelled on a 14-hour flight to Australia.'"

Blair: Iraq invasion merely a demonstration
BBC | Submitted by: Liddell
"Mr Blair reiterated his personal belief in the necessity of the war. He said: 'The conflict here was a conflict of enormous importance because Iraq was a test case.' Iraq had a proven record, he said, of not just developing but using weapons of mass destruction and repressing its own people. 'If we had backed away from that, we would never have been able to confront this threat in the other countries where it exists.' [Don't you mean: in other countries where WMDs actually do exist?] ... Asked by reporters if he still believed WMD would be found in Iraq, Mr Blair said: 'The first thing is to wait for the Iraq Survey Group report. I don't believe that the intelligence we got was wrong.'" [Please, give it up already. This is just getting tedious.]

Sharia justice in action
Independent Online | Submitted by: skuppy
"A Muslim court in northern Nigeria has ordered that a 45-year-old man's leg be amputated as punishment for doing the same to his wife. The Upper Sharia in the town of Bauchi made the order against Adamu Hussaini Maidoya, who cut off the right leg of his wife, Amina. He accused her of infidelity, after 'over exposing' herself to a doctor to get an injection. Judge Alhaji Abdu Yerima ordered that the convict's right leg be amputated at the knee and that the person or doctor who executes the sentence should not administer anaesthetic or painkillers... Maidoya, who wept profusely during the trial, pleaded guilty but pleaded for forgiveness, saying his act was destined by God. Maidoya, a trader, also told newsmen he was neither insane nor under the influence of alcohol when he cut off his wife's leg."

Hillary regrets lameass Gandhi joke
CNN | Submitted by: chris
"Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized for joking that Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in St. Louis, saying it was 'a lame attempt at humor.' The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday. During an event here for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying, 'He ran a gas station down in St. Louis.' After laughter from many in the crowd of at least 200 subsided, the former first lady continued, 'No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th century.' ... Clinton suggested in a statement sent late Monday that she never meant to fuel any stereotype - often used as a comedic punch line - that certain ethnic groups were synonymous with operating America's gas stations."

Arkansas executes schizo
BBC | Submitted by: sTabby
"The state of Arkansas has executed a man with a severe mental illness. Charles Singleton, 44, was forcibly given anti-psychotic drugs which made him lucid enough under court guidelines to be put to death. A diagnosed schizophrenic, he was given a lethal injection in the state's death chamber in Varner for killing grocery store worker Mary Lou York in 1979... last year, the 8th Circuit federal court ruled that Arkansas could forcibly medicate Singleton. Handing down its decision, the court said that 'eligibility for execution is the only unwanted consequence of the medication.'"
