Woman allegedly strangled, fucked for 11 days
BBC | Submitted by: sTabby
"A special needs school teacher from Brighton was murdered to satisfy a musician's 'bizarre and macabre sexual fantasy' of strangling women, a court has heard. Graham Coutts, 35, from Waterloo Street in Hove, allegedly fulfilled his fantasy and then kept Jane Longhurst's body in a storage unit. John Kelsey-Fry, prosecuting, told Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday that Mr Coutts would visit the body every three to four days but was forced to move it when it began to smell."

Spanish imam convicted of wifebeating manual
BBC | Submitted by: sTabbby
"A Muslim cleric who wrote a book that advised men how to beat up their wives without leaving incriminating marks has been sentenced by a Spanish court. Mohamed Kamal Mustafa was given 15 months in jail, which he will not serve as Spanish law suspends sentences of under two years for first offences. [What?] Mustafa's book, Women in Islam, sparked outrage among women's groups when it was published three years ago... In his book, Mustafa wrote that in disciplining a disobedient wife: 'The blows should be concentrated on the hands and feet using a rod that is thin and light so that it does not leave scars or bruises on the body.'"

Ozzy's brain further addled by accident
MSN Entertainment | Submitted by: Keldon
"Rocker Ozzy Osbourne's collarbone has been replaced by a rod and he nearly lost his arm in an all-terrain vehicle accident last month... Osbourne, 55, fractured his collarbone, eight ribs and a neck vertebra when the 600-pound vehicle he was riding flipped and landed on top of him at his estate in Buckinghamshire, southern England. He spent a week on a ventilator. Sharon Osbourne said Ozzy had to have an artery transplant because part of his collarbone cut an artery leading to his arm, and he nearly had to have the arm amputated. At one point, he had no pulse. She said he woke up from a coma and had no sense of smell or taste for a while. She also said he was convinced he had been on tour and had been in New Zealand and in Amsterdam, and in a bomb blast in Wales, for some reason. Ozzy was also convinced he had bought a sheep dog and was asking about it."

Hertz overrun by green monkeys
Miami Herald | Submitted by: Mark Blankley
"You know you are not in New York or Chicago when the airport rent-a-car place has signs reminding customers not to feed the monkeys, which have been spied tossing mango pits at people and using trash-can tops as cymbals. In fact, Hertz is just the latest location in Dania Beach to be beset by a plague of vervets, aka green monkeys, which have been making the small city their own private urban jungle for decades... They have been known to climb into newly washed cars in the neighborhood and make a mess of their interior. They love to jump on the roofs, trampoline style."

Nutball freaks out aboard flight
Sydney Morning Herald | Submitted by: killfege
"Passengers on a Virgin Blue flight last week from Hobart to Melbourne endured a 50-minute tirade by a woman who stripped topless and ranted the flight was the next September 11, according to a witness. A passenger on board the flight, known only as Ellie, told Melbourne radio station 3AW the woman 'absolutely went psycho' as flight DJ 145 taxied onto the runway last Thursday night. Ellie said the woman became loud and erratic, telling passengers she had met an Israeli man who had a vision that everyone was going to die and the plane was the next September 11. 'She wanted to get off the plane and she just said: "We have to stop, we have to stop, we're all going to die, this is the next 9/11... you can't let this plane take off."'"

Kidnapping a burgeoning enterprise in Iraq
Independent | Submitted by: Liddell
"Kidnapping is now the crime of choice among gangsters in Baghdad. Colonel Feisal Ali, a veteran Baghdad policeman, said: 'Criminals who used to steal gold and jewellery now specialise in kidnapping because it is easier and more profitable. Some actually maintain their own private prisons... Before the war, kidnapping made up only about 1% of serious crime, but now it is 70%.'"

Bird flu poised to eclipse SARS
CNN | Submitted by: Gorg
"World Health Organization officials have warned an outbreak of bird flu that has been racing across chicken farms in Asia could become a bigger problem than SARS. Though WHO officials point out there is no evidence of human to human transmission nor is there any documented cases of infection through eating poultry products, they fear the disease may latch on to a normal human influenza virus. Avian influenza is being blamed for at least three deaths in Vietnam during an outbreak there and tests are underway to determine if the disease is responsible for nine more fatalities."

Victims families incensed by prisoner websites
Canadian Broadcasting | Submitted by: Janey G
"Mary Kate Gach thought she had heard the last of Jack Trawick when he went to death row for murdering her daughter in 1992. Instead, Trawick's writings about how he beat, strangled and stabbed Stephanie Gach and killed other women are available to anyone who wants to read them on the Internet... Across the country, dozens of U.S. death-row inmates have had their letters and artwork posted on the Internet, a practice that torments the victims' grieving friends and relatives."

Foreign workers kept as slaves
New Orleans Times-Picayune | Submitted by: dianalily
"About 220 workers from Asia have filed a lawsuit in federal district court in New Orleans, claiming they are victims of human trafficking and were lured into virtual slavery in Louisiana. The suit claims that the men, mostly of Indian heritage, were lured to Louisiana by empty promises of well-paying jobs and then 'kept against their will at various locations and... not allowed to leave.' Many of them 'were reduced to eating out of trash cans and became homeless and destitute,' the suit says."

Mountain made of army's suicidal molehill
MSNBC | Submitted by: Gorg
"The Army's suicide rate in Iraq has been about a third higher than past rates for troops during peacetime, the Pentagon's top doctor said Wednesday... Winkenwerder said the military has documented 21 suicides during 2003 among troops involved in the Iraq war. Eighteen of those were Army soldiers, Winkenwerder said. That's a suicide rate for soldiers in Iraq of about 13.5 per 100,000, Winkenwerder said. During recent peacetime years, that number for the Army has hovered around 10.5 to 11 per 100,000." [21 suicides? How can this be statistically significant?]

FCC chairman relentlessly pursuing Bono
CNN | Submitted by: Murdock
"Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell has asked his fellow commissioners to overturn a much-criticized decision that an expletive uttered by the musician Bono on a network program was not obscene. During last year's NBC broadcast of the Golden Globes Awards, the lead singer of the Irish rock group U2 said 'this is really, really, fucking brilliant.' The FCC's enforcement bureau ruled in October that the comment was not indecent or obscene because Bono used the word as an adjective, not to describe a sexual act... Powell said the FCC needed to balance its rules against indecency and obscenity with the First Amendment right to free speech. Even so, he said, 'I find the use of the "F-word" on programming accessible to children reprehensible.'"

Portland airport shut down by robo-bagpipe
Portland Press Herald | Submitted by: The Good Doctor
"An electronic bagpipe packed in a length of PVC pipe looked so much like a bomb on an X-ray machine screening baggage that officials evacuated Portland International Jetport for more than an hour Tuesday morning. The airport was shut down at 6 a.m. after one of the Transportation Security Administration passenger screeners spotted a suspicious item in the carry-on luggage of a middle-aged local businessman... The electronic bagpipe chanter consists of a cylinder with a thin metal mouthpiece at one end and a battery compartment at the other with wires connecting the components. Bagpipers often use the electronic chanter to practice because it is much smaller than traditional bagpipes."

Commercial pilot arrested for obscene gesture
China Daily | Submitted by: Soylent
"An American Airlines pilot was arrested at Sao Paulo International Airport on Wednesday after making an obscene gesture while being photographed by Brazilian immigration officers, police said. The pilot, identified as Dale Robin Hirsch, raised his middle finger at police to protest new Brazilian security measures that require U.S. citizens to be fingerprinted and photographed upon entering the South American country... the pilot will be charged with disobeying authority. A judge will decide whether Hirsch, 52, will be deported or tried in Brazil, Castilho added. The remaining 11 members of the Miami-based crew were expected to be returned to the United States."
