0.078% of humanity on America's enemies list
Canoe | Submitted by: Liddell
"U.S. security agents have a master list of five million people worldwide thought to be potential terrorists or criminals, officials say. 'The U.S. lookout index contains some five million names of known terrorists and other persons representing a potential problem,' Brian Davis, a senior Canadian immigration official in Paris, said in a confidential document obtained by the Sun... The master list was revealed by U.S. embassy officials to a Canadian standing immigration committee in April 2002... Davis said Canadian visa officers abroad do not keep an extensive list like the U.S. because terrorists can use bogus documents and change their identities."

Giant tumor coming to Discovery Channel
WKMG-TV 6 Orlando | Submitted by: Mel E. Nomah
"A medical team led by a renowned American plastic surgeon began a marathon operation in Bucharest on Wednesday to remove an 176-pound benign tumor from a Romanian woman. The 46-year-old patient, Lucica Bunghez, suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on the body. Her tumor, which covers much of her back and runs halfway down her thighs, weighs twice as much as she would weigh without it - 88 pounds, doctors said... The medical team said it was the second-largest tumor ever to be surgically removed - an operation the Romanian medical establishment was unable to handle without outside expertise and equipment... The Discovery Health channel was filming the operation, which was taking place at Bucharest's Emergency Hospital."

Dubious gizmo designed to assfuck 4th amendment
EE Times | Submitted by: memory.of.earth
"A U.S. company using technology developed in Israel is pitching a lie detector small enough to fit in the eyeglasses of law enforcement officers, and its inventors say it can tell whether a passenger is a terrorist by analyzing his answer to that simple question in real-time... The system used green, yellow and red color codes to indicate a 'true,' 'maybe' or 'false' response. At its CES booth, V Entertainment analyzed the voices of celebrities like Michael Jackson to determine whether they were lying. Besides lie detection, Watson said, the technology 'can also measure for other emotions like anxiety, fear or even love.'"

Hiking magazine contains dangerous misprint
CNN | Submitted by: BroccoliBoy
"The February edition of Trail magazine gives advice to walkers caught in bad weather on Ben Nevis in Scotland about how to make a safe descent. But the magazine's directions would instead lead readers off the north face of the 4,406-foot mountain, which is notorious for its changeable weather and has claimed the lives of several climbers. Guy Procter, the editor of Trail, acknowledged the magazine had inadvertently erased the first of two crucial bearings needed to get off the summit... Trail was criticized by mountain rescue teams last year for claiming three popular hiking routes were snow-free in winter."
