BBC caught lying about WMD dossier
BBC | Submitted by: ChromeDome
"BBC chairman Gavyn Davies has resigned... Davies said no-one at the BBC in the past year had deliberately misled the public, and no one had acted out of malign motivation... Lord Hutton said he was satisfied Dr Kelly had killed himself after being named as the suspected source of the BBC's controversial weapons dossier story. Prime Minister Tony Blair said the report showed 'the allegation that I or anybody else lied to the House or deliberately misled the country by falsifying intelligence of weapons of mass destruction is itself the real lie.'"

Swedish vets urge decriminalization of child porn
pub.tv2.no | Submitted by: Kristyne
"Animal sex is not illegal in Sweden, and every year between 200 and 300 pets are injured because of sexual assaults... 'We have seen an increase since 1999 when child pornography became illegal,' said Johan Beck-Friis. 'It appears, in other words, as there are some people who have replaced children with animals. In both circumstances, it is sex with defenceless individuals.' ... The fact that animal sex is becoming an increasing problem can be indicated by the mere fact that there is an increasing selection of animal porn at video rentals and there an increasingly number of websites with animal pornography is surfacing... a British study from 2001 indicates that every 20th dog or cat that receives treatment at veterinaries, the injuries are not a result of a direct accident, but the animal has been inflicted the injury as a result of a sexual assault. [WHAT?] According to the Swedish paper Expressen, if the same estimate can be used in Sweden that will indicate that 200 to 300 dogs and cats every year are injured as a result of sexual assaults."

Scientists still baffled by Sudanese nodding syndrome
Atlanta Journal Constitution | Submitted by: hamster
"[Martha Halim] suffers from a strange affliction called 'nodding syndrome,' apparently unique to southern Sudan. Its young victims tend to nod vigorously at the sight of food. The condition often progresses to severe seizures, mental retardation and death... The affliction, which has been found in about 300 children so far, baffles experts. The World Health Organization began investigating it about two years ago, around a year after Martha's symptom first appeared... Peter Spencer, an American neurotoxicologist who has investigated the condition for WHO, [said] 'If we're smart, we will unravel it. We won't let it burn on like we did HIV.'"

Bush backing away from AIDS funding
New York Times | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"President Bush plans to scale back requests for money to fight AIDS and poverty in the third world, putting off for several years the fulfillment of his pledges to eventually spend more than $20 billion on these programs. Hardest hit would be the United Nations-supported Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, whose contribution from the United States would drop to $200 million in fiscal year 2005 from $550 million... Mr. Bush has highlighted the programs in his fund-raising speeches. He told an audience in St. Louis this month that his administration had accepted its global duties to fight 'disease, and starvation, and hopeless poverty.'" [But let's keep spending money to promote Christianity, disguised as teen abstinence programs.]

Michael Jackson impersonators feeling the heat
ABC News | Submitted by: Samuel Vimes
"Business hasn't been booming since Jackson was arrested and charged with nine counts for allegedly victimizing a 12-year-old boy who spent time at his Neverland Ranch. Some impersonators and lookalikes fear that a conviction would kill not only the singer's career, but theirs as well. 'I'm concerned, simply because I love what I do,' said Kenny Wizz, a Las Vegas-based entertainer who has been impersonating Jackson for 20 years... 'I wouldn't want to develop another character at this point. I love doing his character, and with everything that goes on, that I see in the media, it makes me nervous.' ... Jackson performers fear a conviction will condemn them to the same fate as Pee-Wee Herman impersonators after actor Paul Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure in a Florida movie theater in 1991... 'When Pee-Wee Herman was arrested, business went down [for impersonators] 100 percent.'"

Times reporter offends nutballs
New York Times | Submitted by: Marc
"A man named Marc with a floppy blond Mohawk and a crimson sport coat let out a welcoming call from the platform. He carried an e-flat euphonium under his arm and had a habit of making noise, any noise. He was the nonleader of this nonevent: a 'spontaneous, digitally organized' party on BART, as the Bay Area Rapid Transit is known... When the reporter approached Marc, the party's nonleader who was described by others on the car as both a chef and hacker, Marc asked to see proof of employment. He looked disdainfully when handed a New York Times business card, refusing to take it. Marc then declined to speak further... Marc sought out the reporter. He let it be known that the reporter had been an unwelcome partygoer and the events of the evening did not belong in any newspaper, especially one interested in profits, he said. 'You are stealing our art,' Marc said in what became a long lecture about corporate journalism. 'You are commercializing our culture.'"
