Kid finds bloody syringe in his Legos
KETV-TV 7 Omaha | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"An Omaha teen opened a box of toys this week to find more than the Legos he expected inside. Joshua Morgal, 14, found a syringe full of blood... Morgal's mother, Laura Ewoldt, bought her son a box of toys at the St. Vincent DePaul store in Omaha to reward him for good grades. When her son brought her what he'd found in the box, he had already been scratched - maybe by the Legos, maybe by the syringe. 'After rewarding him with a $15 toy for doing good in school, now I don't know if he's gonna live or die,' Ewoldt said Morgal will be tested for HIV... in addition to the syringe, she and her son found a toy dart, a small metal rod, a ring, a box of matches and some batteries that had leaked." With video.

Publisher dumps novel based on Nazi porn industry
Deutsche Welle | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A few weeks before it was to hit the presses, a German publishing house pulled a book based on the secret porn industry of the Third Reich... when the Rowohlt publishing house completely cancelled its contract with author Thor Kunkel shortly before his new novel, Endstufe (Final Step), was to hit the presses, a slight sensation rippled through the industry... The manuscript, which landed in the hands of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, was apparently not only filled with scenes of vivid sex and brutality, but made some questionable ties between the crimes of the allied army and those of the Nazi regime... [Kunkel] came upon the subject material for Endstufe after watching a documentary in 1991 that looked into the little-known porn industry that apparently flourished during the Third Reich. After asking around, he eventually got in contact with someone who had copies of the so-called Sachsenwald films. The films are reportedly filled with with scenes of sex, power relations and violence." [Sounds like a publicity stunt.]

Court rejects infeasible glory hole story
Independent Online | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Penis size came under scrutiny on Thursday when the Jali Commission of Inquiry into prison maladministration probed claims by a former inmate that he was forced to perform oral sex on a warder through a window. Joe Mokwana, for the accused warder Thokozane Nxumalo, told the commission it would have been an impossible feat for his client to get his penis through that particular window. The narrow window started chest height off the ground, had a vertical bar in the middle, and the wall in which it was mounted was thicker than the organ was long."

Salley has been charged with the 2001 shooting of Chicago Police Detective Joseph Airhart after officers attempted to arrest Salley on bank robbery charges. Pentagon reluctantly postpones Internet voting scheme
BBC | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The Pentagon is scrapping plans for an internet voting system for overseas US citizens to use in November's election. Officials previously defended the e-voting system despite a critical report saying it would not be secure enough. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz reportedly took the decision because officials could not 'assure legitimacy of votes that would be cast.' ... Mr Wolfowitz said in a memo the Pentagon 'will not be using the Serve internet project in view of the inability to assure legitimacy of votes that would be cast using the system, which thereby brings into doubt the integrity of election results,' according to an anonymous defence official."

Florida facing electronic voting lawsuit
Law.com | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Seeking to prevent a replay of the 2000 presidential election debacle, U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler is seeking a court order today to require election officials to create a paper trail for electronic voting machines... Wexler alleges that the paperless, touch-screen voting machines used in Palm Beach County and 14 other Florida counties are illegal because they don't produce an individual, verifiable record of each person's vote. He contends that such a paper trail is needed to allow manual recounts in close elections. Miami-Dade and Broward counties also have machines that don't produce paper ballots. So if the judge agrees with Wexler, the suit will impact those counties and any others in Florida with touch-screen systems."

E-Voting shill receives fresh, new anus
Indianapolis Star | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Members of the Johnson County Election Board on Thursday blasted a representative from Election Systems & Software for providing allegedly illegal voting equipment during last year's general election. The state's election commission had not certified the software used in the machines as reliable and accurate, which meant counties should not have used it... 'When you sold the equipment to the county, you told us the equipment was certified,' she told [ES&S representative Wesley Wiley]. 'We held an illegal election. We have every reason to doubt this company and their equipment, its integrity.'"

18 Chinese drown in England
CNN | Submitted by: Typhoid_Mike
"Eighteen people have died in northern England after a group of cockle pickers were trapped by rising tides, police said. As rescuers recovered the bodies of the victims in Morecambe Bay, Lancashire, on Friday, a local lawmaker said the deaths were a 'tragedy waiting to happen' because too many people were being exploited to collect the shellfish delicacy in treacherous conditions. The rescue operation was launched on the previous night after a group of cockle pickers, said by local media to be Chinese, were reported missing."

Too many fake gimps ruin it for everybody
Sacramento Bee | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Disneyland has toughened eligibility requirements for front-of-the-line privileges to people claiming to have ailments or disabilities preventing them from standing in long lines. The freely issued 'special assistance passes' were too frequently abused. Disney is now asking a lot more questions before giving guests the special passes... In the past, visitors insisted on hopping to the front of the line by saying 'I have a bad back' or 'I have a handicapped parking placard.' Sometimes, groups of teenagers would flip a coin to see who would rent a wheelchair, then use the chair to get a pass to the front for a group of six."

Woman accused of blackmailing basketball players
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | Submitted by: buck_fabies
"A 38-year-old woman claimed early yesterday that members of the St. John's University basketball team raped her in a Downtown Pittsburgh hotel. By nightfall, she was the one arrested and accused of filing false reports to police and trying to extort money from the players. The arrest of Sherri Ann Urbanek-Bach, a laid-off flight attendant from Astoria, N.Y., capped a day that saw the university expel one player and suspend four others after the rape allegations became public... police charged Urbanek-Bach, who was in Pittsburgh to visit relatives, with making fictitious police reports, prostitution and attempted theft by extortion, all misdemeanors."

Christian bands sneak into the mainstream
Christian Science Monitor | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Tune into the Grammys on Sunday night and you'll hear the name Evanescence more than a few times... the band has shown that its musicianship is solid but its diplomacy needs some work. In the past year, the group alienated a segment of the industry they seemed to have an affinity with - the Christian market - by insisting that its albums be pulled from Christian stores, charts, and radio stations... in an interview in Entertainment Weekly last spring, the group foreshadowed their soon-to-be-announced flip-flop when they said they couldn't understand why they were being pushed in the Christian market. Evanescence declined to be interviewed for this article."

Warranty voided on Janet Jackson's Superbowl bra
New York Post | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Furious staffers at the freaky Manhattan fetish shop that sold Jackson the bustier she wore at the Super Bowl say she altered it to make a tearaway bra cup - giving folks the impression that their clothing for the kinky crowd is badly made... 'There's no way it would have ripped that way,' fumed Sam Hill, the female manager of DeMask, which also sells whips, masks, studded collars, harnesses and scary-looking rubber sex aids. 'We're known for putting together solid, long-lasting pieces. People use our stuff for mind-altering, body-altering experiences. It has to be good quality... They took off the studs that kept the cup in place and replaced them with snaps so it could just come off.'"
