Nutball goes on clone-killing rampage
Lexington Herald-Leader | Submitted by: KrisAbyss
"A domestic-violence shooting that spiraled into a six-hour standoff killed a Lexington woman, a firefighter and wounded at least three others yesterday. After hours of negotiations, police blasted chemical agents into a home in rural southern Fayette County. Pat Hutchinson, 45, was apprehended about 9:45 p.m... Hutchinson told the Herald-Leader that he shot Fontaine and then the paramedics because he was staging a coup against human clones. 'You're about to see armageddon,' said Hutchinson, who spoke calmly about a vast conspiracy involving UFOs, alien clones and the CIA. 'I started with my wife,' he said. 'I shot her in the head. ... She's got a radio sticking in her skull.'"

Brazilian police raid senator's slave plantation
BBC | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Brazil's Labour Ministry has said it has freed more than 30 people being held in slave-like conditions on the ranch of a senator. Officials said they discovered 32 slave-workers on the ranch of right-wing Senator Joao Ribeiro in the northern state of Para. They said the captives worked seven days a week without pay and had no running water or toilets... Brazil was the last country in the Americas to officially abolish slavery in 1888 and it imported the most slaves from Africa."

Memogate scandal continues to heat up
Bennington Banner | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Republican snooping through Democrats' tactical memos on President Bush's judicial nominees has grown into a full-blown Capitol Hill uproar - with comparisons to Watergate, accusations of court tampering and conservatives attacking senior GOP senators. Already, two staffers implicated in giving newspapers and conservative groups the memos stored on a shared Judiciary Committee computer server have been forced to leave. Secret Service agents are prowling the Capitol interviewing legislative aides, and some senators are calling for an outside investigation - perhaps by the FBI - and severe punishment if warranted... 'Somebody needs to be fired,' said Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, one of the newest Judiciary Committee Republicans. 'Somebody in Washington needs to eventually lose their jobs, whether it's on weapons of mass destruction or this type of behavior.'"

Cops accused of gangraping women
New Zealand Herald | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The scandal over the alleged cover-up of a claimed police pack-rape deepened last night with fresh allegations of inappropriate sex in the force - this time against the officer who originally investigated Louise Nicholas' complaint. The former detective inspector in charge of the Rotorua CIB, John Dewar, who handled Mrs Nicholas' accusation that she was raped by three officers, was last night accused, with one of the alleged rapists, Brad Shipton, of having group sex with another woman. The woman claimed on One News that she was manipulated into having sex in the mid-1980s with Mr Dewar, Mr Shipton and a third officer, Clint Rickards, who has been stood down as Auckland's police commander pending the outcome of an inquiry into the cover-up claims and a fresh criminal investigation."

Seals killed, mutilated
Portsmouth Herald | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A grisly discovery in town last Thursday brought to nine the number of mutilated seals found in New England waters. The seal discovered on Feb. 5 was decapitated and had the letters 'M,' 'A,' and 'L' carved in its side... The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Law Enforcement Bureau officials said it is not typical to see cases like this in New England... Last week, four dead seals were found in Massachusetts, adding to the three skinned seals discovered in Hampton and Kittery. A fourth seal found in the region was too decomposed for accurate tests, but its death is being considered suspicious. In the New Hampshire cases, the seals had been skinned and their male genitalia were removed, allegedly for sale as an aphrodisiac on the Oriental Black Market."

South Korea cracks down on erotic candies
Independent Online | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"South Korea's Food and Drug Administration on Thursday banned cheeky Valentine's Day chocolates shaped like genitals or couples making love. The administration said 15 firms including an Internet shopping website were targeted by the ban on lewd candy that officials say could give the wrong idea to sweet-toothed youngsters... 'Some of the chocolate candies depict couples engaged in sexual intercourse or were in the shape of the male genital,' Park In-Won, an administration official told reporters."

Why free trade doesn't apply to pharmaceuticals
St. Petersburg Times | Submitted by: Katie
"Pig imports caused Rep. Gil Gutknecht to become Congress' leading Republican crusader against high prescription drug prices. Gutknecht, whose Minnesota district is known for producing pigs and Spam, the canned lunch meat, says he had an epiphany about drug pricing during a telephone conversation with a top official at the Commerce Department a few years ago. Told that the U.S. government could do nothing to control cheap pig imports from Canada, Gutknecht recalls: 'All of a sudden a light bulb went off over my head and I said, "You mean we have free markets when it comes to pork bellies, but not when it comes to Prilosec?" And he chuckled on the other end of the phone and said, "Well, that's right."' Since then, Gutknecht, a high-energy conservative with a strong independent streak, has sided with Democrats, defying leaders of his own party, including President Bush, by advocating reimportation of lower-priced, U.S.-made drugs from Canada."

Microsoft involuntarily goes open source
vnunet.com | Submitted by: Vomit
"Microsoft has confirmed that some of the source code for Windows 2000 and Windows NT has been leaked onto the internet... 'Microsoft became aware that portions of the Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source code were illegally made available on the internet,' the firm said in a statement... The code is contained within a 203MB compressed file and is not complete. Uncompressed it fits on a CD, which could indicate plans for future mass distribution or simply the method by which it was stolen. But the code will be useful for those designing malware to attack Microsoft's software. Sections of Windows XP are based on the NT and 2000 code. 'At this time there is no known impact on customers,' stated Microsoft."

County voting officials unclear on whole security concept
San Jose Mercury News | Submitted by: Katie
"Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters Jesse Durazo and nine other California elections officials have challenged Secretary of State Kevin Shelley's authority to require security measures to safeguard the integrity of electronic voting systems in next month's presidential primary... Last week, Shelley ordered the random testing of touch-screen voting machines and other measures in response to reports that demonstrated how software flaws in electronic voting systems could allow hackers to manipulate votes and change election results... Though the systems are state-certified, they have come under increasing criticism for security flaws. The machines also lack the ability to produce an independent paper record that can be used to verify contested elections... 'Frankly, I cannot understand why any public official would oppose these measures,' Shelley wrote. 'If the software malfunctions, or is corrupted, there is no way to reconstruct the results of an election.' Among other precautions, Shelley has ordered county election officials to post election results at individual polling places to guard against glitches that can affect central vote-counting computers."

Ohio voting official attempted to hide info from press
Cleveland Plain Dealer | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"One of three companies trying to sell voting machines to Cuyahoga County says the county's lawyer advised it to protest a request by The Plain Dealer to review its proposal. The private attorney for the Board of Elections, James Friedman, 'requested that we object to such disclosure since these materials constitute confidential trade secrets,' according to a memo between officials of Hart InterCivic, one of three companies competing for the county contract worth more than $20 million. But Hart officials had no problem with the Plain Dealer request, according to the Jan. 14 memo... The Plain Dealer asked in December to review proposals submitted by Diebold Elections Systems, Election Systems & Software, Hart InterCivic and Sequoia Voting Systems, which has since pulled out of negotiations, and any internal county Board of Elections documents related to the proposals."

Former employees accuse Halliburton of gouging
Sydney Morning Herald | Submitted by: anyone other than Bush in 2004
"Two ex-Halliburton employees told US Democratic congressmen that vice-president Dick Cheney's old energy company 'routinely overcharged' for work it did for the US military, the congressmen said today. The Texas oil services giant, which is being examined by the military for possibly overcharging for services, has consistently denied allegations of overbilling... 'What is most disturbing about these allegations from the whistleblowers is the regular and routine nature of the overcharging,' the politicians wrote in the letter to DCAA Director William Reed... 'One whistleblower said that a Halliburton motto was: "Don't worry about price. It's cost plus,"' said the letter, referring to the practice of charging for a service and then adding a percentage fee as profit."

Wal-Mart happy with ethnicky SpongeBob valentines
Detroit Free Press | Submitted by: zsoul
"Boxes of SpongeBob SquarePants Valentine's Day cards are popping up in local Wal-Mart stores - but the popular cartoon character found inside isn't his traditional yellow color. He's black. And with his trademark big teeth and wide eyes, this SpongeBob seems similar to offensive images of African Americans portrayed in minstrel shows decades ago... A Wal-Mart official said customers who want refunds can have them, but there were no plans to take the boxes off shelves. 'It was a very popular item, and there aren't very many left out there,' said corporate spokeswoman Danette Thompson. She said the company had received no other complaints."
