Guerrillas stealing civilian blood, faces, penises
BBC | Submitted by: sTabby
"At least 100 people, mostly unarmed civilians, have been killed in a wave of horrific attacks in southern Democratic Republic of Congo. One survivor told the BBC's Arnaud Zajtman in Lubumbashi that militiamen drained the blood of those they killed and put it into bottles. 'After they had cut off the sexual organs, they walked away with them. They took the victims' blood in flasks,' said Claude Panza wa Losol, 22, nursing a bullet wound in his arm in the town's Don Bosco hospital. The military commander of Katanga province, General Alengbia Nzambe, showed our correspondent pictures of the bodies of seven soldiers who had their faces and genitals cut off. Our correspondent says that many fighters believe that using the body parts of their victims to make charms will make them more powerful."

Sniper blows up houses, ambushes firefighters
KMBC-TV 9 Kansas City | Submitted by: Pinklizard
"Two homes exploded in south Kansas City Monday afternoon as an apparent sniper fired shots at emergency workers. One female paramedic was hit... one explosion may have been caused by a propane tank in one of the homes. NewsChopper 9 was in the air above the home when the second explosion occurred and captured it on tape. The explosion sent debris flying into the air at least 1,000 feet, Rowlands said. Police said rubble landed five blocks away from the home... Police said the shots were fired from the woods near one of the homes. Because of the shooting, no emergency or fire workers approached the house despite intense flames. Kansas City Fire Chief Smokey Dyer called what happened a 'deliberate ambush.'" With video.

WLWT-TV 5 Cincinnati | Submitted by: Reid Fleming

Jennifer Dute, of Anderson Township, appeared in adult videos that were sold on a Web site that criticized Hamilton County Sheriff Simon Leis, a long-time opponent of pornography... Dute sold the homemade videos that showed her having sex with multiple partners... She was convicted and sent to prison, but an appeals court set her free. The court ruled that Dute did not get a fair trial because similar videos that a jury decided were not obscene were inadmissable."

Woman proudly claims Nazi heritage
Bend Bugle | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
People out on their Saturday rounds in northeast Bend may have been startled, even shocked, if they happened to spot what was painted on the windows of a former gas station: large swastika and 'SS' symbols, in broad white paint, beside a busy parkway on- and off-ramp at Division Street and Revere Avenue... Pauline Gaines was taken into custody and was held without bail at the Deschutes County Jail on parole and probation violations, as well as two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, drug (methamphetamine) possession, resisting arrest, and attempting to assault a public safety officer... She was contacted behind the Cash Hut, a business across Revere Avenue from the former gas station, allegedly attempting to siphon gas with a black hose. She identified herself and when asked how the swastika got on the building, allegedly said, 'I just wanted to show my heritage.'"

Why we love the First Amendment
Sunday Times | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The Zimbabwean government has defied yet another court order allowing the country's only independent daily newspaper to resume publishing - and, instead, sent in riot police to shut down its printing works this weekend... Nqobile Nyathi, editor of the Daily News, said the staff were preparing an eight-page edition but, before it could be distributed, armed police sealed off the printing works in Harare and ordered all the staff to go home... In a prepared statement, Information Minister Jonathan Moyo said: 'It is patently clear that today's judgment of the Administrative Court has no force of law and thus cannot be implemented... Consequently government will not tolerate any violation of this clear legal position.'"

Bush finally supports gay marriage amendment
CNN | Submitted by: Mr.Silver
"President Bush said Tuesday that he supports a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage to prevent what he calls 'the meaning of marriage from being changed forever.' ... Criticizing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and officials in a New Mexico county who moved to let same-sex couples receive marriage licenses, Bush said that in recent months 'some activist judges and local officials have made an aggressive attempt to redefine marriage... If we're to prevent the meaning of marriage from being changed forever, our nation must enact a constitutional amendment to protect marriage in America. Decisive and democratic action is needed because attempts to redefine marriage in a single state or city could have serious consequences throughout the country.' [Such as? Like what? For instance?] ... 'We should also conduct this difficult debate in a matter worthy of our country, without bitterness or anger,' he said. 'In all that lies ahead, let us match strong convictions with kindness and good will and decency.'" [Oh, that's rich.]

Electronic voting marches on, despite crappy security
KGTV-TV 10 San Diego | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The San Diego County registrar of voters assures the system is reliable; however, many have their concerns... University of California San Diego computer security expert Yoshi Kohno and three colleagues associated with Johns Hopkins University studied the Diebold voting system last year. 'And within half an hour of beginning our analysis, we saw some major flaws that people in Computer Security 101 are taught not to do,' Kohno said... Scientists at San Diego-based Science Applications International Corporation agreed that 'the system is at high risk of compromise.' Diebold has since made some changes, security and otherwise, and state officials certified the machines for the March election. 'That's kind of like saying, "Oh, my house has termites. I see spots here and here, so I'm going to do some spot treatment." But to actually really have a secure system, you have to go back from scratch and bomb the whole house to get rid of all the termites or completely re-evaluate the system,' Kohno said. However, come Election Day, Maryland, Georgia, Florida and California will go forward with voting electronically." [Today is the last day for California voters to request an absentee ballot.]
