Feds withheld Oklahoma City bombing video
Guardian UK | Submitted by: Doich
"A Secret Service document written shortly after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing described security video footage of the attack and witness testimony that suggested Timothy McVeigh may have had accomplices at the scene. 'Security video tapes from the area show the truck detonation 3 minutes and 6 seconds after the suspects exited the truck,' the Secret Service reported six days after the attack on a log of agents' activities and evidence in the Oklahoma investigation. The government has insisted McVeigh drove the truck himself and that it never had any video of the bombing or the scene of the Alfred P. Murrah building in the minutes before the April 19, 1995, explosion. Several investigators and prosecutors who worked the case told The Associated Press they had never seen video footage like that described in the Secret Service log."

Competitive drunk self-immolates
Newsday | Submitted by: whatever
"An intoxicated Davis Park man died after he lit a rug on fire and challenged his roommate to see who could stay in the house on Fire Island longer Saturday night, Suffolk County police said. Police said Thomas Woods, 59, ignited the rug in his house at 9 Driftwood Walk sometime before 8 p.m. As the fire spread, Woods fired one or two rounds from a pre-World War I Mauser pistol, said Det. Sgt. Ed Fandrey of the Suffolk County homicide squad. Police do not know why he fired the gun. When the fire began spreading dangerously, Woods' roommate, Rod Bennett, ran to a neighbor's house to call 911 a few minutes after 8 p.m. Volunteers from the Davis Park Fire Department responded, along with neighbors who tried to extinguish the blaze with garden hoses and anything else they could find. But it was too late."

Senate about ready to shut down CAPPS program
Information Week | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Last week, after American Airlines admitted giving data in 2002 to the Transportation Security Administration, some began asking if the agency's controversial passenger prescreening program would ever be deployed. A Senate committee responded to American's admission by tartly demanding that TSA name all the airlines it has approached for data... The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee recently sent a letter to Asa Hutchinson, undersecretary for border and transportation security, implying that TSA misled Congress about CAPPS II. Committee chairwoman Susan Collins, R-Maine, and ranking member Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., said they'd been told that delays in tests of CAPPS II were because of a lack of real data, when it appears TSA had abundant data." Victim confronts pedophile in court
Wire Services | Submitted by: analogking
"Sabine Dardenne, now 20, is a key witness at the trial of Marc Dutroux, a convicted pedophile who was on parole when he allegedly abducted and raped six girls between 1995 and 1996. Four of the girls died. He has admitted kidnapping and sexually abusing Dardenne and the other girls, but claims he was working for a criminal network that recruited prostitutes across Europe. Dardenne said Monday that Dutroux was the only person she saw during her 1996 imprisonment, and lawyers say her testimony dispels theories that he was part of a pedophile network... At the end of her testimony, Dardenne turned toward her one-time attacker and asked: 'Why did you not kill me?' Dutroux replied that he never considered it. He did, however, admit sexually abusing her - 'I bear the full responsibility for that,' he said."

UN peacekeepers killing each other in Kosovo
BBC | Submitted by: Mark B.
"Four Jordanians detained in Kosovo over a gunfight between international police on Saturday are now being interrogated as potential suspects. UN officials have confirmed that the incident began when Jordanian police fired on vehicles carrying US police. The US officers returned fire and two Americans and one Jordanian were killed and 11 others were wounded. The Jordanians could not be formally interviewed until the UN waived their right to diplomatic immunity... The UN says that as they left the compound, at least one member of a Jordanian special police unit opened fire on the US vehicles. The Americans returned fire. Two female Americans and one male Jordanian died... The top UN official in Kosovo, Harry Holier, said he was 'deeply shocked and dismayed' over the incident."

US Army resorts to AC/DC
Wire Services | Submitted by: BoredPerv
"In Fallujah's darkened, empty streets, U.S. troops blast AC/DC's 'Hell's Bells' and other rock music full volume from a huge speaker, hoping to grate on the nerves of this Sunni Muslim city's gunmen and give a laugh to Marines along the front line. Unable to advance farther into the city, an Army psychological operations team hopes a mix of heavy metal and insults shouted in Arabic - including 'You shoot like a goat herder' - will draw gunmen to step forward and attack. But no luck Thursday night. The loud music recalls the Army's use of rap and rock to help flush out Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega after the December 1989 invasion on his country, and the FBI's blaring progressively more irritating tunes in an attempt to end a standoff with armed members of the Branch Davidian cult in Waco, Texas in 1993."

Shell Oil executives caught lying, fired
BBC | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Shell executives knowingly hid the company's oil and gas shortfalls as far back as 2001, an independent review has revealed. In its most damning piece of evidence it quotes one of the firm's former executives writing about 'lying' and how the firm had 'fooled' the market... Two of the key memos the review unearthed were written by [Walter van de Vijver, CEO of Exploration and Production]. In one he wrote about how investors could not be 'fooled' forever, and in the other he said he was 'sick and tired about lying about the extent of our reserves issues.' But a month later Mr van de Vijver told staff to destroy a document outlining part of the reserves shortfall, because it was 'dynamite.'"

South Africa about to try snuff murder case
Independent Online | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Ronald Edward Grimsley of Fontainebleau, Randburg, facing charges of rape, indecent assault, aggravated robbery and murder, appeared in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday... The 'snuff murder' hit the headlines after the body of Tanya Kelly Flowerday, 18, was found on the pavement in Durham Street, Darrenwood, in June last year. Earlier claims by Grimsley that two drug dealers had filmed the death of Flowerday to sell on the overseas market have not been substantiated."

Georgia town muzzles public protests
Wire Services | Submitted by: concheats
"Robert Randall never knew free speech could cost so much - in dollars and in compromises - until he tried to organize a large-scale, peaceful demonstration for this summer's G-8 summit. The coastal city of Brunswick, where Randall hopes to gather up to 10,000 people to protest the world leaders' summit, passed a law last month that places conditions on public demonstrations. Organizers of protests like Randall's 'G-8 Carnival' must put up refundable deposits equal to the city's estimated cost for clean up and police protection. Demonstrations may only last 2 hours, 30 minutes. Signs and banners may not be carried on sticks that might be brandished as weapons. And the signs may not be larger than 2-by-3 feet... Brunswick requires groups of six or more to apply for permits at least 20 days before an event. The city's ordinance sets no limit on deposits, and says permits may be denied if a demonstration is likely to congest traffic, impede commerce or endanger the public." [Just about any public activity can be construed as impeding commerce.]

Indiana e-voting tampering law no longer useless
WISH-TV 8 Indianapolis | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"It all started last November when voters used new touch-screen voting machines in Johnson, Henry and Wayne Counties. Neither voters nor election officials knew they were voting using a version of embedded computer code called firmware that had not been certified by the state... 'I think you guys sat in this room and you all lied to me,' said Brian Burdick, Indiana Election Commission, addressing ES&S officials at a heated March meeting. 'If we could fine you, I'd be making a motion now,' S. Anthony Long, election commissioner, told the ES&S officials at the same meeting. But they couldn't. Even though ES&S broke the law, Indiana code contained no penalties until now. 'We are now going to make it illegal for a voting system vendor to operate in Indiana - that is sell, market, lease a system that is uncertified,' said Todd Rokita, secretary of state."

ISP servers seized in child porn investigation
Wired | Submitted by: DrN1ck
"For $10 a month, a small company offered access to a search tool that would scour electronic bulletin boards for millions of 'uncensored' movies and photographs and serve up 'an all-you-can-eat taste of "the Internet gone wild!"' Voicenet Communications executives said they didn't know users also were using their system to access child pornography... The seizure of Voicenet's servers in suburban Ivyland was the first time a Pennsylvania law enforcement agency has stopped an Internet firm from facilitating access to child porn, lawyers said... John Morris, an attorney with the Center for Democracy and Technology, a civil liberties group, said companies like Voicenet can block access to improper Usenet content, but don't always know what people are posting on their system. 'It's one thing to seize a server that is being used for a single website that is illegally serving up child pornography,' Morris said. 'But to go into an ISP and seize servers that have millions of postings on them that are perfectly lawful, with no real evidence that the ISP was intentionally doing anything criminal, is a much more questionable situation.'"

A second Tigger turns out to be pervy
Sun | Submitted by: dianalily
"Camcorder footage has caught a second cuddly Tigger groping a mum at a Disney theme park. The video - shot at Toon Town in Florida's Disney World - shows an actor dressed as the cartoon character grabbing his victim's breast from behind. Brit Michael Chartrand, 36, was kicked out by Disney chiefs last month after being charged with molesting a mum and her 13-year-old daughter while dressed as Tigger. More than 30 women have accused him of fondling them after he began working at the park last summer. But the new video was shot in December 2002 and shows another groper in the tiger suit."
