Pope finally defrocks NAMBLA priest
San Bernardino Sun | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Paul Shanley, the Roman Catholic priest who served at a local church in the 1990s and was a key figure in the clergy sexual abuse scandal, has been removed from the priesthood. In a letter sent Monday and obtained by The Associated Press, Boston Archbishop Sean O'Malley informed Shanley that Pope John Paul II decided on Feb. 19 to defrock him... Shanley became a focal point of the scandal after plaintiffs' attorneys forced the church to release internal records showing complaints about Shanley... he had attended a forum with other people who later went on to form the North American Man-Boy Love Association, an organization that advocates sex between men and boys."

Accused torturer admits making prison 'hell'
London Telegraph | Submitted by: Truth machine
"One of the seven soldiers facing possible court martial for abusing detainees revealed that she did not read, or even see, a copy of the Geneva Convention until two months after she was charged. Specialist Sabrina Harman, 26, said she now understood that it was regularly breached at Abu Ghraib. 'I read the entire thing, highlighting everything the prison is in violation of. There's a lot,' she said... Harman - a former pizza parlour assistant manager - said her job at the jail was to soften prisoners before interrogation. 'They would bring in one to several prisoners at a time, already hooded and cuffed,' she said. 'The [military police] job was to keep them awake - make it hell so they would talk.'"

Wire Services | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A McDonald's manager testified Friday that Timothy McVeigh and a dark-skinned man were part of a group that piled out of a Ryder truck and entered her restaurant just days before the Oklahoma City bombing... Joan Rairden testified that the men visited the McDonald's in Junction City, Kan., shortly before midnight on April 13 or 14, 1995. She said three people came inside, including McVeigh and the man with the dark skin and slicked-back hair... McVeigh came into the restaurant with the same group during the lunch hour a few days later, she said."

Design flaw, operator error, corpulence caused coaster death
Boston Globe | Submitted by: girlwcurls
"State officials said yesterday that an overweight man fell to his death from a roller coaster last week at Six Flags New England because a park attendant did not make sure he was secured in his seat and he was too bulky to be properly restrained by the lap bar used on the ride... Stanley Mordarsky, 55, plunged to his death last Saturday on the Superman ride, despite a fastened seat belt and a locked lap bar. The report released yesterday by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety faulted the lap bar and a design that allows some riders to float out of the restraint during sudden rises and dips... Specialists in amusement ride safety say that previous accidents on similar roller coasters should have prompted the industry to make life-saving modifications."

Syndicated host Rush Limbaugh played it nationwide later Friday... [Constituent Daniel L. Dow] faxed Stark a letter Thursday afternoon saying he was 'appalled' by Stark's vote against the resolution... [The Congressman's voicemail promised] 'I'll call you back later and let you tell me more about why you think you're such a great, goddamn hero.'"

Cult expansion bothersome to many
Boston Herald | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The 3,000-member international sect [Twelve Tribes], led by elusive 'prophet' Elbert Eugene 'Yoneq' Spriggs, runs the Common Sense health food shop on Main Street in Plymouth and recently purchased an adjacent building where they will open an eatery... Ex-members, though, say the Judeo-Christian religious sect is really a brainwashing cult that preaches against interracial marriage, sucks members dry of money and property, and abuses children. In addition to hitting children with 'balloon rods,' the sect has been accused of locking kids in basements and forcing children to work at their factories... followers, who believe they are a 'chosen' people who will be saved by the Messiah upon gathering 144,000 male virgins, deny wrongdoing and say they're 'misunderstood.'"
