Sisters allegedly murder, cannibalize possessed dad
Telegraph India | Submitted by: bacchante
"Yasmin, 22, and Taslima, 25, now in police custody and reported to be unsound, believed that 'Iblis,' the great Satan, had possessed their father, said police. If the account of the delirious sisters is anything to go by, they locked their ailing father, Yunus Mian, in a room, bound him up with chains and slaughtered him. The siblings then danced around his corpse... Officials said the siblings' claim of having drunk their father's blood and eaten some of his organs would be confirmed during post-mortem, after which a case would be registered... He had not been keeping well for some time and family members were of the opinion that he had been afflicted by some evil supernatural power - namely, Djinns."

Crack buddy killed over Faces of Death
Canoe | Submitted by: Hans Krule
"A metal artist who killed a man after they debated the merits of the horror film Faces of Death and their failure to pick up girls was sentenced yesterday to almost eight years in prison. 'It was a savage, horrific attack,' Justice Todd Archibald said in passing the 85-month sentence on Glen Soikie, 32, for the Oct. 19, 2002, slaying of Mexican musician Jorge Garcia-Briones... Garcia-Briones' head was bashed in with a wrench, leaving 18 cuts on his scalp and exposed brain matter in the attack at Soikie's bizarre Geary Ave. loft... Soikie met Briones, 24, at a rock concert the night he killed him. They drank and smoked crack-cocaine, and then got into an argument over Faces of Death, a 1978 horror documentary that features death scenes."

Suspected murderer commits meticulous suicide
Seattle Post-Intelligencer | Submitted by: Lady Despair's Lover
"After putting goods in storage and affairs in order, the retired Navy lieutenant [Derek Hunter] - medically discharged in 1998 - downed booze, popped pills, sat on a wooden bench swing in his parents' back yard in Florida, put a handgun to his temple and, in a curiously choreographed bit of timing, pulled the trigger. The 'neat freak' had carefully placed two towels - one blue, one white - on either side of him to catch blood spatters. The date was Sept. 2, 2003, seven years to the day after the mysterious disappearance of his 35-year-old wife, Mary Frances Hunter - a disappearance that led to a maddening multiple-agency murder investigation, with Lieutenant Hunter as the prime suspect."

South Florida Sun-Sentinel | Submitted by: Hermes Trismegistus
"A newlywed middle school teacher has been charged with having sex numerous times with a 14-year-old student, including in a classroom, her apartment and once in a vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove. Debra Beasley Lafave, 23, turned herself in to Marion County authorities in Ocala Monday... Authorities say Lafave, who has been married less than a year, had sex with the student in the back of her sport utility vehicle while the student's 15-year-old cousin drove them around the Ocala area. Monday's charges are in addition to those from last week's arrest in Temple Terrace, when she was charged with two counts of committing lewd and lascivious battery for allegedly having sex with the teen in a portable classroom at her school."

Groom strangles jealous bride
BBC | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"A newly-wed husband strangled his bride of just one month with a beach towel after she accused him of looking at other women, Cardiff Crown Court has heard. The jury was told on Monday Christopher Elsbury, 29, from Bridgend, south Wales, murdered Melanie, a mother-of-three, after they returned home from a party on 4 January. The court heard that a post mortem examination had detected evidence of more than 50 injuries on her body... 'I heard her screaming and then I just couldn't stop, there was nothing in front of me. I lost my rag and I just lost it,' he said. Mr Elsbury said his wife's last words were: 'I love you,' Mr Lewis told the jury."

Army running out of personnel
Macon Daily | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The U.S. Army is planning an involuntary mobilization of thousands of reserve troops to maintain adequate force levels in Iraq and Afghanistan, defense officials said on Monday. The move - involving the seldom-tapped Individual Ready Reserve - represents the latest evidence of the strain being placed on the U.S. military, particularly the Army, by operations in those two countries. Roughly 5,600 soldiers from the ready reserve will be notified of possible deployment this year... the last time the Individual Ready Reserve, mainly made up of soldiers who have completed their active duty obligations, was mobilized in any significant numbers was during the 1991 Gulf War."

Couple claims they weren't actually trying to sell baby
ABC TV affiliates | Submitted by: optional
"A Philadelphia couple is free on bail after allegedly putting their 4-month old son in a duffel bag and offering him for sale. Twenty-eight-year-old Timothy Pingue and 38-year-old Otilia Ayala now say they put the baby in the bag to protect him from wind-blown sand while vacationing over the weekend at the beach in Wildwood Crest. Police are investigating the possibility that the offer to sell the child was, in their words, 'a very bad joke.' In the meantime, the child is in state custody."

Mistrial declared in alleged gangrape case
Los Angeles Times | Submitted by: Pol
"A judge on Monday declared a mistrial in Orange County's high-profile gang-rape case after jurors lamented they were 'hopelessly deadlocked' over charges that three young men victimized an apparently unconscious 16-year-old girl in a Newport Beach mansion. The case, which has riveted Orange County for months, was built around a videotape of the incident made by the defendants, who include the son of a wealthy Corona del Mar businessman and top assistant to Sheriff Michael S. Carona... If convicted on all counts, the three could have each been given up to 55 years in prison for raping the girl and sexually assaulting her with objects including a pool cue and a lighted cigarette."

Mayor combative during legal deposition
Detroit News | Submitted by: Westlander
"Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick defended the dismissal of a deputy police chief from his internal affairs duties, but refused to answer questions about whether he had extramarital affairs with several women, according to a deposition released Monday. The 90-page transcript revealed little new information about the dismissal of Gary Brown, who had authorized an investigation into wrongdoing by the mayor's security detail and rumors about a wild party at the mayor's official residence, the Manoogian Mansion. The deposition comes at a time when Kilpatrick is accused of using his security officers to help procure women as part of their city-paid duties... The transcript portrays a tense atmosphere, with the mayor at one point chewing an apple, and his lawyer asking repeatedly for the time."

Bush interviewed by Irish reporter
CNN | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"In an interview with Irish television ahead of a U.S.-EU summit, U.S. President George W. Bush defended his stance on Iraq and said the war has not incited terrorists... In the sometimes combative interview with Irish network RTE - the president at one point asking the interviewer to let him finish his answers - Bush disputed the suggestion that the world is more dangerous with the focus on Iraq instead of Afghanistan and al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden... Bush appeared frustrated when Coleman interrupted him as he was talking about the Middle East. 'Please, please, for a minute, okay?' Bush said 'It'd be better if you'd let me finish my answers and then you can follow up if you don't mind.'" [Well maybe she wouldn't have to interrupt you if you'd stop veering off-topic for one of your scripted monologues.]

Supreme Court unhappy with Internet porn ban
Wired News | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a law meant to punish pornographers who peddle dirty pictures to Web-surfing kids is probably an unconstitutional muzzle on free speech. The high court divided 5-to-4 over a law passed in 1998, signed by then-President Clinton and now backed by the Bush administration. The majority said a lower court was correct to block the law from taking effect because it likely violates the First Amendment... The court did not end the long fight over the law, however. The majority sent the case back to a lower court for a trial that could give the government a chance to prove the law does not go too far."

Mattel loses lawsuit over naked Barbies
CNN | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Mattel Inc. must pay more than $1.8 million in legal fees and court costs to a Utah man who incorporated nude Barbie dolls in his artwork, a federal judge has ruled. The award stems from a lawsuit the El Segundo-based toy maker filed in 1999 against Tom Forsythe of Kanab, Utah, on grounds that his series of photos, 'Food Chain Barbie,' infringed on the toy maker's copyrights. The photos often depicted Barbie dolls placed in sexually provocative positions... Mattel contended the images might hurt its brand and lead some consumers to believe that the company, which began selling the doll line in 1959, might be behind the photos."

TV apparently promotes fucking
New Scientist | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"Children who watch a lot of television produce less melatonin, new research suggests - the 'sleep hormone' has been linked to timing of puberty. Scientists at the University of Florence in Italy found that when youngsters were deprived of their TV sets, computers and video games, their melatonin production increased by an average 30%. 'Girls are reaching puberty much earlier than in the 1950s. One reason is due to their average increase in weight; but another may be due to reduced levels of melatonin,' suggests Roberto Salti, who led the study... Alessandra Graziottin, director of the Centre for Gynaecology and Medical Sexology in Milan, said the results were very interesting and plausible. She told La Repubblica newspaper: 'US studies have shown that the greater the exposure to television, the earlier the age of sexual experience, including teenage pregnancies.'"

"World chocolate production could fall dramatically if diseases which have already devastated cacao crops in some countries are allowed to spread, an expert warned today... Chimps turn tables on zoo visitors
KGTV 10 San Diego | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"At Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, the apes finally get to have a little fun with the people walking through the exhibit. By touching panels that visitors can't see, chimpanzees get to fire harmless air bursts at visitors to the ape center. The apes can also control fans that cool or heat their habitat and touch a panel that launches snacks into the enclosure. The Los Angeles Zoo has also made its ape exhibit more interactive. It allows the apes to pull on ropes that will either ring a bell or shoot water at visitors."
