3 of the 9/11 hijackers tripped airport metal detectors
New York Daily News | Submitted by: unfunny
"A never-before-seen videotape of the Arab hijackers who slammed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon on 9/11 shows three of the five men triggering metal detectors before they boarded the doomed jetliner. The chilling surveillance, taken at Washington's Dulles Airport on the fateful day in 2001, shows all five hijackers calmly passing through a checkpoint... Furious relatives of the passengers who died that day believe the tape shows the last missed chance to save their loved ones... Officials of the 9/11 commission believe the hijackers at Dulles were carrying box cutters either on their bodies or in their luggage... Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi had been fingered in 1999 as Al Qaeda associates and placed on a terrorism watch list a month before the 9/11 attacks."

Arab terrorists presumably planning encore
Washington Times | Submitted by: Rufferto
"Flight crews and air marshals say Middle Eastern men are staking out airports, probing security measures and conducting test runs aboard airplanes for a terrorist attack. At least two midflight incidents have involved numerous men of Middle Eastern descent behaving in what one pilot called 'stereotypical' behavior of an organized attempt to attack a plane. 'No doubt these are dry runs for a terrorist attack,' an air marshal said... A second pilot said that, on one of his recent flights, an air marshal forced his way into the lavatory at the front of his plane after a man of Middle Eastern descent locked himself in for a long period. The marshal found the mirror had been removed and the man was attempting to break through the wall. The cockpit was on the other side... 'It's a probe. They are probing us,' said a second air marshal, who confirmed that Middle Eastern men try to flush out marshals by rushing the cockpit and stopping suddenly."

Cannibalism prompted by angeldust hallucinations
WDIV-TV 4 Detroit | Submitted by: victoria3407
"Marc V. Sappington, 25, told detectives he started hearing voices after smoking the hallucinogenic drug PCP in 2001. He said he only heard the voices while under the influence of drugs. 'They started telling me if I didn't eat, I was going to die,' Sappington said in the videotape. 'They said I had to eat flesh and blood if I want to live.' Sappington is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Terry T. Green, 25; Michael Weaver Jr., 22; and Alton 'Fred' Brown Jr., 16, in April 2001... Around 7 a.m., Sappington said, he lured Brown into his house with the suggestion the two smoke marijuana. They went into the basement, where Sappington said he shot Brown. 'I was drinking his blood,' Sappington said on the videotape. 'I was licking it off the floor, and I had to throw up, but I couldn't because I had to eat.' He said he had trouble eating Brown's leg raw, so he went upstairs, fried it in a skillet and ate most of it."

Family friend allegedly stabs toddler
Portland Press Herald | Submitted by: Meadmaster
"Police arrested a Portland woman Wednesday on charges of stabbing the 15-month-old son of her best friend and then setting a fire to destroy evidence. Police charged Christine Courchesne, 24, with elevated aggravated assault and arson a day after Kayd'n Neves was stabbed seven times at the Brookfield Terrace apartments in Portland. His family said the toddler will survive the attack, which punctured a lung and kidney and cut his diaphragm... The stabbing and the arrest of Courchesne stunned [Tiffiny Post] and her family, who are trying to understand why a close friend is now accused of stabbing a toddler she baby-sat... 'This is completely unexplainable. She was the most gentle person I ever met. I don't know what happened.'"

"A San Diego cop once hailed as a hero for pulling an elderly couple from a burning home was taken into custody yesterday after a two-month investigation concluded he was selling stolen goods on eBay. Patrol Officer James Estrella was arrested with his wife at their Chula Vista mobile home as sheriff's investigators crawled through a warehouse packed with electronic and sporting equipment. Assistant principal charged in alleged hoax
Pasadena Star News | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"An assistant principal at San Marino High School was arrested Tuesday for allegedly sending herself 39 threatening letters, which prosecutors say she claimed were sent by students. Mary Andrea Mitchel, 41, could face more than 30 years in prison if convicted on all 123 charges... The letters began arriving in March 2003 and continued through November, [Deputy District Attorney Shelly Torrealba] said. In that time, Mitchel was given escorts and surveillance, Torrealba said. Police also called upon the FBI, the South Pasadena Police Department and U.S. Postal Service investigators to assist in the investigation. At one point, officers were searching all mail that arrived at San Marino High School to screen out threatening letters addressed to Mitchel... Torrealba said the letters were typed, and a couple of them contained white powder."

Immolation prompted by lack of fireworks
WISH-TV 8 Indianapolis | Submitted by: thebigwow
"'[A friend] goes and gets the gasoline, the victim takes his shirt off, he pours the gasoline on the shirt, the victim puts his shirt back on and his other friend lights him on fire,' explained Eric Brown, White River Township Fire Marshal. Authorities say that happened after [Thomas Jefferson] and two friends ran out of fireworks and decided to try to light each other's clothes on fire.  Jefferson was engulfed in flames from his head to his waist... authorities call it a stunt gone terribly wrong - a horrible lesson about the dangers of fire... Jefferson, who was severely burned, is expected to remain in a drug-induced coma for the next couple of weeks in Riley Hospital."

Smugglers implant 1.3 kilos of cocaine into dogs
Wire Services | Submitted by: thebigwow
"Gregory Graham, 27, and Kaye Chapman, 20, plotted to smuggle 1.3 kilograms of cocaine into Britain hidden inside the stomachs of golden Labrador Rex and black Labrador Frispa. But the scheme was foiled when officials at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport became suspicious at the behavior of Rex and Frispa when they arrived from Colombia en route to London's Stansted Airport. Rex was lively but a drugs package had burst inside Frispa and she was lying apathetically. Dutch vets operated on the dogs, removing 11 cylindrical objects from Rex and 10 from Frispa, who later died."

Sacramento Bee | Submitted by: thebigwow
"Chairs - some weathered and broken - were scattered around what Sacramento County sheriff's officials said was a 500-bird cockfighting operation, complete with knives, slashers and steroids that had apparently been used to prime the cocks for fights to the death... deputies, responding to a domestic violence call Wednesday, found the cockfighting operation and combined with numerous agencies Thursday to dismantle it... cockfighting operations are growing in California, since surrounding states have made cockfighting a felony, while it remains a misdemeanor here."

Prospective health textbooks lacking in sex info
MSNBC | Submitted by: BlueRat
"Only one book under review by the Texas State Board of Education references condoms. However, an initial textbook review committee found that book, Essentials of Health and Wellness by Thomson Delmar Learning, 'nonconforming' to state guidelines because the book did not emphasize abstinence enough... In 1994, conservative groups lobbied to change the health textbook by eliminating any mention of homosexuality or contraceptives, and detailed drawings of male and female anatomy."

North Korea still reveres Kim Il Sung
Moscow Times | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"[Grigory Mekler, formerly the top Soviet propaganda officer in Korea] vividly recalled the time he spent grooming [Kim Il Sung] to lead a country that has become one of the world's most authoritarian nations... In June 1997, TV Center showed a documentary about Kim Il Sung, for which the director, Leonid Mlechin, interviewed Mekler. Mlechin said that after the program aired, he and his family began receiving telephone threats from the North Korean Embassy in Moscow... 'If it goes on the air, you will end up in a morgue,' Mlechin recalled the man as saying. Mlechin and his family complained to the Foreign Ministry and left home. They returned a week later only after a deputy foreign minister called Mlechin to inform him that the ministry had expressed concern to the Korean ambassador. The calls then stopped, he said."

The autopsy found that Piton's blood-alcohol content was .260, more than three times the legal limit. Under Texas law, a level of .08 is considered intoxicated."

Alligator bites off woman's arm
CNN | Submitted by: DelaV2
"A 12-foot alligator attacked a landscaper Wednesday behind an island home, dragging her into a pond before a neighbor and police officers yanked the woman from the animal's jaws. 'It was kind of a tug-of-war,' said the neighbor, Jim Anholt. Part of Janie Melsek's right arm had to be amputated later during six hours of surgery. She also was severely bitten on her buttocks and thighs, but doctors believe she will walk again, her family said. She remained in critical condition. Melsek, 54, was trimming a tree when the alligator attacked... Rescuers struggled for about five minutes to pull her from the pond... Police shot the alligator in the head, killing it."

Married dykes seek divorce after only 5 days
Globe and Mail | Submitted by: ahramin
"After a quickie marriage, a lesbian couple was hoping for an equally fast divorce. But the partners find themselves in a legal limbo. The federal government acknowledges that same-sex couples should be allowed to get divorced, but the divorce law still considers a married couple to be a man and a woman. The Toronto couple is seeking Canada's first same-sex divorce since three provinces and one territory began to allow gays and lesbians to wed. They had been in a relationship for almost 10 years when they tied the knot on June 18, 2003, a week after Ontario allowed same-sex marriages. But their marriage lasted only five days... The lawyers deny the couple married and broke up so soon after the happy wedding day to test the federal Divorce Act, which was not changed to allow for same-sex divorces when same-sex marriages became legal. 'They're just average people who got married, their marriage didn't work, and now they want a divorce like any other straight married couple is allowed to have.'"
