Alleged wombsnatcher in custody
Lawrence Journal-World | Submitted by: Kim
"According to a federal criminal complaint, Lisa M. Montgomery admitted she strangled Bobbie Jo Stinnett and took her baby. The complaint also said Montgomery lied to her husband about giving birth, although U.S. Atty. Todd Graves declined to give a motive for the crime. Stinnett's mother found the 23-year-old nearly dead Thursday in her northwest Missouri home. Paramedics tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at a hospital... Several pregnant women have been killed in recent years by attackers who then removed their fetuses, in some cases to pass the children off as their own. In the most recent case, a 21-year-old woman was shot to death in Oklahoma in December 2003, allegedly by another woman who pretended the 6-month-old fetus was her child. The fetus died and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty."

44% of Americans oppose America's core ideals
MSNBC | Submitted by: Superfood
"Nearly half of all Americans believe the U.S. government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim-Americans, according to a nationwide poll. The survey conducted by Cornell University also found that Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious. Researchers also found that respondents who paid more attention to television news were more likely to fear terrorist attacks and support limiting the rights of Muslim-Americans... 44% favored at least some restrictions on the civil liberties of Muslim Americans... 27% of respondents supported requiring all Muslim-Americans to register where they lived with the federal government... The margin of error was 3.6%."

US soldier murders Iraqi boy after gay sex
News and Observer | Submitted by: Bung Holio
"A North Carolina National Guard member thought to be the first U.S. soldier convicted of murdering an Iraqi said he 'snapped' and shot the 17-year-old boy after they had consensual sex, according to court-martial records released this week. Pvt. Federico Daniel Merida, 21, of Biscoe, a tiny town south of Asheboro, pleaded guilty during a court-martial in Iraq to shooting the Iraqi national guard private, whose name the Army withheld... [Falah Zaggam] and Merida were on guard duty May 11 in a tower on the perimeter of an Army camp near Tikrit in northern Iraq. About 10:30 p.m., Merida shot Zaggam repeatedly with his M-4 carbine. The 'gay panic' motive was the third that Merida offered. He first told investigators that Zaggam demanded money at gunpoint. Later, he said he killed Zaggam because the boy forced him to have sex. Interviewed a third time by skeptical investigators, Merida said he got angry after the two had consensual sex."

CIA's secret prison within Guantanamo Bay
Wire Services | Submitted by: suicide_nation
"The CIA is allowed to capture and hold certain classes of suspects without accounting for them in any public way and without revealing the rules for their treatment... The CIA facility at the Guantanamo Bay prison was constructed over the past year as the agency confronted one of its toughest emerging problems: where to hold terrorists for interrogations that could last for years... The CIA is believed to be holding about three dozen al Qaeda leaders in undisclosed locations, U.S. national security officials say. Among them are pivotal Sept. 11 plotters Khalid Sheik Mohammed, Ramzi Binalshibh and Abu Zubaida and the leader of Southeast Asia's Islamic terrorist movement, Nurjaman Riduan Isamuddin, who is also known as Hambali. CIA detention facilities have been located on an off-limits corner of the Bagram air base in Afghanistan, on ships at sea and on Britain's Diego Garcia island in the Indian Ocean."

British antiterror law struck down
Guardian | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A scathing law lords judgment condemning the indefinite detention of foreign terror suspects as a threat to the life of the nation left anti-terrorist laws in tatters yesterday. The ruling by an 8-1 majority held that the indefinite detention without trial at Belmarsh, and Woodhill high security prisons was unlawful under the European convention on human rights... Lord Hoffmann ruled that there is no 'state of public emergency threatening the life of the nation'... It was the anti-terror laws introduced by Mr Blunkett which posed a threat, he declared. 'The real threat to the life of the nation, in the sense of a people living in accordance with its traditional laws and political values, comes not from terrorism but from laws such as these.' ... Lord Scott described the regime under which suspects can be detained indefinitely on the say-so of the home secretary with no right to know the grounds for detention as 'the stuff of nightmares, associated with France before and during the revolution, with Soviet Russia in the Stalinist era, and now associated, as a result of section 23 of the 2001 Act, with the United Kingdom.'"

"A British pornographic film star fed her disabled husband paracetamol pills and made him a noose to hang himself so she could inherit his money, a court heard today. Ms Johnson has pleaded not guilty to aiding and abetting Edwards's suicide attempt on December 4, 2003, at his home in Bristol... Prosecutor Andrew MacFarlan said Ms Johnson forced Mr Edwards to make a will a month before he attempted suicide... Mr Edwards said his wife 'wasn't impressed' when he began to feel sick... 'She was getting a bit frustrated because I was taking quite a long time, so she tried to help me try to hang myself,' he said."

Man allegedly kidnapped, raped for 24 hours
KTUL-TV 8 Tulsa | Submitted by: johnnyb
"The 43-year-old man told police he was riding his bicycle through the parking lot when he was hit by a white box truck. 'The occupants, a heavy set male and heavy set female, got out, apologized, offered to fix his bicycle,' says Sergeant Gary Stansill. 'They offered to take it down to a local bicycle shop down the street.' But, once inside the truck, the suspects pulled out a gun, stripped and bound the victim and drove him to an unknown location. 'This individual was sexually assaulted repeatedly over about a 24 hour time period,' Stansill says. 30 hours after the ordeal began, the victim and his damaged bike were dumped along 3200 Southwest Boulevard. The man was found running naked along the road, his hands still bound." [Helpful hint for next time: never, ever get into the stranger's car.]

Hells Angels mount advertising campaign
Canadian Television | Submitted by: Alex
"The Ontario wing of the Hells Angels has put up a billboard on a Toronto highway as part of a new public relations campaign. The motorcycle gang says they want to 'right the wrongs' done to them by the 'government-controlled' media. The Angels' PR campaign comes amid an ongoing trial in Barrie, Ont., north of Toronto, in which the Crown is trying to prove that the Hells Angels are a criminal organization... They say they've been made the 'bogeyman for all of society's ills' while such issues as 'government corruption and immigration-fed crime... are hamstrung by self-interest and reverse racism.' ... Under the gangsterism laws, first used in 2001, participating in a criminal organization can mean up to 14 years in prison. The law was passed in 1997 to help put an end to Quebec's bloody biker war that's claimed 150 lives."

ACLU reportedly compiling donor dossiers
New York Times | Submitted by: Jonny Plasma
"The American Civil Liberties Union is using sophisticated technology to collect a wide variety of information about its members and donors... Some board members say the extensive data collection makes a mockery of the organization's frequent criticism of banks, corporations and government agencies for their practice of accumulating data on people for marketing and other purposes. Daniel S. Lowman, vice president for analytical services at Grenzebach Glier & Associates, the data firm hired by the ACLU, said the software the organization is using, Prospect Explorer, combs a broad range of publicly available data to compile a file with information like an individual's wealth, holdings in public corporations, other assets and philanthropic interests... [New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's] office informed the ACLU that it was conducting an inquiry into whether the group had violated its promises to protect the privacy of donors and members."
