Girl survives tsunami only to be gangraped
Wire Services | Submitted by: fredbox
"A teenager who escaped death but was left orphaned and homeless by the Asian tsunami met yet one more agony: gang rape, one of several cases of child abuse being investigated in the disaster zone, an official said Saturday. Of all the human tragedies emerging from the worst natural disaster in decades, sexual abuse of vulnerable children in refugee camps must be among the most shocking... [Harendra de Silva, head of the National Child Protection Authority] is investigating several complaints of sexual abuse in centers housing tens of thousands of survivors... De Silva gave few details of the case of the gang-raped 17-year-old girl, which occurred in the area of Galle on the southern coast but not in a refugee center. Hours after being washed ashore and left orphaned and homeless, she was raped by six men, he said."

KCTV-TV 5 Kansas City | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A gunman held the mother of his children hostage at a McDonald's restaurant Friday before he was fatally shot by police. Police said Giangreco, who lived in the Kansas City suburb of Liberty, went to the McDonald's where the woman - who had a protective order against him - works... The woman sent Giangreco away, police said, but he returned early Friday afternoon and sent everyone but her out of the restaurant... [police spokesman Darin Snapp] said the decision to shoot him was made because Giangreco was behaving erratically, threatening the woman and refusing to negotiate."

Cops charged with faking arrest reports
WTVJ-TV 6 Miami | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Prosecutors say [deputies Christopher Thieman and Christian Zapata] illegally closed cases in order to better their performance records... Thieman and Zapata also allegedly wrote reports saying suspects confessed to crimes that they could not have committed because they were behind bars at the time. For example, BSO records show 24-year-old Jeremy Sangry confessed to 148 burglaries but was charged with only two. 'Half of them were done while he was still in jail up in Pennsylvania before he was even in the state of Florida,' Sangry's uncle, Jeff Miller, said. Sangry said he was propositioned by deputies to admit to the crimes in exchange for immunity."

Feds unconcerned with suspected BSE steer
Globe and Mail | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Even if the new [BSE] case is confirmed, it's not expected to delay the announced reopening of the U.S. border to Canadian cattle. That reflects a big change in thinking since May 2003 when the discovery of a single case closed the border. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration was given advance warning of the suspected case and proceeded with the reopening announcement anyway... Prime Minister Paul Martin spoke to U.S. President George W. Bush early Friday about the suspected case coming just as the border re-opening was announced."
