Tsunami survivor possibly stolen by sex slavers

"Swedish police have arrived in Thailand to investigate reports that a 12-year-old survivor of the tsunami has been kidnapped from a hospital. Two officers are helping Kristian Walker's family and Thai police search for him, amid fears he may have been taken by child sex traffickers... The family fears that Kristian may have been taken out of Thailand in the chaos that followed the tsunami, when many Europeans were able to fly out without their passports."

Island tribe fires arrows at relief helicopter

"An Indian helicopter dropping food and water over the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been attacked by tribesmen using bows and arrows. There were fears that the endangered tribal groups had been wiped out when massive waves struck their islands... The Indian coastguard helicopter was flying low over Sentinel Island to drop aid when it came under attack. A senior police officer said the crew were not hurt and the authorities are taking it as a sign that the tribes have not been wiped out by the earthquake and sea surges."

Man allegedly attacks woman, 69 and girl, 11

"A Davenport teen was in Scott County Jail Monday after allegedly throwing a pot of hot coffee at a 69-year-old woman and punching an 11-year-old girl in the face New Year's Day... [Joshua R. Lacey, 19] was being held in jail on $23,400 bond. Police say a man broke through a back door at a house in the 2100 block of W. Glaspell Street, Davenport, about 2:15 p.m. Saturday, and assaulted the woman and girl, according to the affidavit."

Prolific kidfucker pleads guilty

"A paedophile used his two daughters to lure their young friends to his home where they were drugged, assaulted and photographed, a court has heard. Glyn Martin, 53, of Bessingby Gate, Bridlington, East Yorkshire, had more than 6,000 indecent pictures of young girls when police raided his house. On Tuesday, Martin admitted 57 counts of indecent assault, child abduction and indecency with children. Earlier, the court was told that police found on undeveloped rolls of film a further 12,000 indecent images of young girls, involving 1,100 further victims. The girls photographed were between the ages of two and 12 and the pictures were taken between the mid-1980s and 2003."

Home daycare providers charged with child molestation

"Police have charged a day-care provider and her son, a registered sex offender, with an incident involving a child under the woman's care. Gwendolyn Riddick Quattlebaum, 59, and Irving Riddick, 42, were arrested Friday after, police say, the son inappropriately touched one of the children who is cared for by her during the week... Quattlebaum told the Republican-American of Waterbury Sunday she cares for eight children under the age of 10 each weekday. Riddick, who cooks for the day-care center, was convicted in 1992 of second-degree sexual assault and is listed on the state's sex offender registry."

"The same day Ernest Averiett was sentenced to 26 years behind bars for torturing and burning his ex-girlfriend with a clothes iron, he was indicted in connection with two unsolved rapes... the victim described how Averiett tortured her because he thought she was unfaithful. She testified that Averiett pinned her on the bed in her Benton Street S.E. apartment while burning her over 40% of her body. She said he beat her while socks were stuffed in her mouth and then took her to an out-of-town hospital while he made up a story that women in Youngstown jumped her and burned her."

Special ed teacher pleads not guilty to torture

"A 48-year-old teacher in Seminole County, Fla., arrested in November after being accused of torturing her autistic students was charged Tuesday with five counts of abusing the children in her class. The accusations against teacher Kathleen Garrett included rubbing a child's face in vomit and slamming another child's head so hard that he lost his front teeth, according to a Local 6 News report. In one instance, Garrett is accused of rubbing her body against a child and saying 'cry for mama.' ... Garrett's classroom assistants said they were too frightened to speak out about the reported abuse and said they were aware of it for years."

Horse transportation deemed lacking

"A horse that was dragged behind a pickup in a St. Louis gas station parking lot Saturday was euthanized Monday morning... Witnesses saw the mare fall out of the back of a horse trailer pulled by a pickup at a gas station at 6020 North Broadway about 9:30 p.m., police said. The driver of the truck told witnesses the horse was having a seizure and had to be separated from about 15 other horses in the overcrowded trailer to prevent injury. Witnesses said the man beat the horse with his fists and yanked on its harness, police said. Later, the man dragged the horse onto a side street with another pickup, telling witnesses he had to get the rest of the horses to Mississippi... The mare had external and internal injuries, including apparent spinal damage from falling and being dragged, police said."

"Authorities say a roughly 6-month-old male fetus was delivered Oct. 4 after the 16-year-old mother allowed her boyfriend to hit her repeatedly in the abdomen with a baseball bat over the course of two weeks. The buried fetus was discovered in November... Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said the boy - a 16-year-old from Richmond - was being charged with intentional conduct against a pregnant individual resulting in miscarriage or stillbirth. Under the 1999 Michigan law that made it a crime, only the person acting against the pregnant woman is criminally liable, while the mother is not." [Whoops.]

Partygoer allegedly takes break to murder girl

"There are new details in the murder of a 15-year-old Garner girl... Police say the suspect himself, 19-year-old Kenneth O'Neal, confessed that he killed [Amanda Maynard] and then returned to a party at a house just up the road where he played the piano and told jokes... O'Neal [allegedly] admitted to police that he entered Amanda's house with a knife and walked up the stairs. When Amanda saw him, she started screaming and he ran to her and started stabbing her. According to the report, O'Neal says after the murder, he went back to the location of a party he'd been at earlier in the night, putting the sheath of the knife in a trash can at the house. He told police that he then went to an upstairs bathroom and washed the blood off his hands. He then came downstairs and told a few jokes, even played the piano before going back home."

"Authorities say a former Kingston firefighter awaiting trial on arson charges for an alleged October fire has confessed to setting fire to a church in Roane County. Law officers say he may be linked to other suspicious fires... [Glen Armes] is a former captain for the Kingston Fire Department. In October, he was indicted on three counts of arson and released from his job. He is awaiting trial on charges he burned three abandoned homes in Kingston... Armes is facing various charges, including arson, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana."

"A Riverside teenager charged with his older half brother in The Sopranos-inspired decapitation killing of their mother may testify against the now-22-year-old brother. The headless and handless body of Jane Bautista, 41, was dumped in the Cleveland National Forest two years ago... Matthew B. Montejo, who was a 15-year-old sophomore at Martin Luther King High School when he was arrested in January 2003, could be a key witness in the case against his half brother Jason V. Bautista, a prosecutor said... The brothers allegedly strangled Jane Bautista in their Riverside apartment, then continued their routines for more than a week even though her severed head and hands were stored in a closet in the apartment."

Police kill world's toughest man

"When officers arrived about 12:30 p.m., the man waved a machete at police and retreated into a bedroom, where he barricaded himself in a closet. In an attempt to get him to drop his weapon, police doused him with pepper spray eight times, hit him with rubber plugs from a weapon known as a sage gun roughly 15 times and shot him in the chest with an electronic stun gun twice, police said. He withstood the pepper spray and sage-gun blasts, [Capt. Scott Warner] said, pulled one stun-gun probe out of his chest with his hands and used the machete to slice the second probe's wires. Police opened fire when the man, still wielding the machete, jumped through a window and charged them, police said."

"In a brash move during his sentencing, an admitted killer and rapist decided to turn and speak to the relatives of his victim in a Philadelphia courtroom. 20-year-old Sean Brown was sentenced Monday to 3 consecutive life prison terms. It was in a house in the Somerdale section of Philadelphia where Brown shot and killed Patricia Henry, raped and murdered her 15-year old daughter Patricia Stallworth, and killed James Cofer in 2003. Brown pleaded guilty to avoid a possible death sentence. Yesterday, he stunned the courtroom when he turned to the victims' relatives and told them he was 'too pretty to have raped anyone.'"

Australian tsunami hero arrested for burglary

"Thomas David Connell was handcuffed and arrested by Queensland state police after he stepped off the plane at Brisbane International Airport. Police said they recognized Connell, whom they had been seeking for two years, after he gave a television interview from Thailand that aired in Australia last week. The said he is wanted on assault and burglary charges. The 32-year-old businessman was dubbed by local media as 'the good samaritan of Patong Beach' for his role in allegedly saving as many as 20 people during the Dec. 26 tsunami that smashed over the island resort of Phuket... Connell said he spent most of the day in a holding cell suffering flashbacks of his ordeal, and that police had mistaken him for someone else. 'To be a life saver, saving 20 people, and then come back to my home country and I'm going straight into a bloody jail cell with hoodlums all day,' Connell told Channel 10 television network. 'I'm not a bloody hoodlum.'"

"A teenager was killed during a rural town's New Year's tradition of firing vintage black-powder muskets into the air, but town officials declared Monday that the centuries-old ritual would continue to be celebrated. During the revelry early Saturday, a rifle exploded and pieces of the barrel struck 18-year-old Matthew K. Shook in the side of the head. 'There's no effort in place here to end the practice,' Mayor Bob Austell said in a telephone interview. 'This is something that's been going on in Cherryville for more than 200 years. We have grandsons firing off muskets that once belonged to their grandfathers.'" [Wonder what the NRA thinks about this.]

Man allegedly gets aggro at Burger King

"A man angrily berated fast-food employees and nearly hit a worker with his truck when a drive-thru clerk told him the restaurant was out of french fries, police said... Sgt. Rod Fairman said [Gregg Luttman] made an obscene gesture to the drive-thru clerk, then entered the building with another man. Luttman repeatedly cursed at the restaurant staff then walked back to his vehicle; when he noticed restaurant workers taking down his license number, Luttman revved his pickup in reverse, nearly hitting one of the employees, Fairman said. Police stopped the truck a short distance away on Route 255, where Luttman scuffled with police, kicking out the back window of a police cruiser after he was handcuffed, Fairman said."

"Officials with the California Department of Fish and Game were shocked to see a farmer's surveillance video of a pet goose fighting off a bobcat several times, according to Local 6 News. Fred Painter of Sonora, Calif., said he installed a surveillance camera on his property after nine pet ducks, four chickens, 2 geese and other animals kept disappearing. When Painter looked at the videotape the next morning, he saw his pet goose fending off a bobcat... An hour after the initial attack, the bobcat was seen reappearing in the video and attempting to attack the goose. Again, the goose was able to fend off the attack."

Bulgarian impossibly drunk

"The 67-year-old man landed in hospital on Dec. 20 after a car knocked him off his feet in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, police and doctors said Tuesday. A breath test indicated blood-alcohol levels so high that police thought their equipment was broken, because the man remained conscious and talked with them. The head of Plovdiv police, Col. Angel Rangelov, said five separate lab tests taken the same day confirmed the man's blood-alcohol level of 0.914. A blood-alcohol level of 0.55 is considered potentially fatal... The man, who has not been identified, was reported to be in stable condition after being treated for head injuries."
