Alleged killer suicides via flaming defenestration
Mirror | Submitted by: stoned and obsolete
"The killer of Sally Geeson plunged 150ft to his death after turning himself into a human fireball, it emerged last night. Lance Corporal David Atkinson, 31, jumped from a seventh-floor hotel window in flames hours after the student's naked body was found. There were straps on his body and a cord about his neck. He was still alive when rescue services arrived at the scene 360 miles from where Sally vanished. But he died shortly afterwards... Atkinson, whose attitude towards women worried army bosses, asphyxiated Sally after luring her into his car... after learning Sally's corpse was found, he set fire to himself and leapt to his death."

Ex-CIA bigwig: let's not catch Bin Laden
Times | Submitted by: Jonny Plasma
"If the world's most wanted terrorist is captured or killed, a power struggle among his Al-Qaeda subordinates may trigger a wave of terror attacks, said AB 'Buzzy' Krongard, who stepped down six weeks ago as the CIA's third most senior executive... 'if something happens to Bin Laden, you might find a lot of people vying for his position and demonstrating how macho they are by unleashing a stream of terror.' ... Several US officials have privately admitted that it may be better to keep Bin Laden pinned down on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan rather than make him a martyr or put him on trial. But Krongard is the most senior figure to acknowledge publicly that his capture might prove counter-productive." [Utter bullshit. Good thing you left the Agency.]

CIA, Navy SEALs allegedly tortured Iraqi
Sacramento Bee | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Navy SEALs and CIA officials kicked, punched, choked and eye-gouged detainees in 2003 at a U.S. military base in Iraq, a former SEAL testified Monday. The witness said he saw the 'interrogation by means of abuse' take place at Camp Jenny Pozzi, the SEAL base at Baghdad International Airport, in an area the troops called the 'sand pit.' He said a prisoner under interrogation by the CIA was abused in October 2003 by two or three SEALs... he watched for 10 minutes as SEALs punched, choked and poked their fingers in the eye of Iraqi Manadel al-Jamadi, who also was punched by a CIA official when he didn't answer questions. Al-Jamadi, a suspect in the bombing of a Red Cross facility in Iraq, died a few hours after he was captured during a joint CIA-special operations mission in November 2003. He died while being interrogated by CIA personnel in the shower room of the Abu Ghraib prison."

British soldiers allegedly tortured Iraqis
Independent | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Photographs of British troops allegedly torturing Iraqi prisoners and forcing them to perform sexual acts will serve as key and potentially damning evidence in the courts martial of four soldiers... The four are charged with assault and indecent assault for alleged incidents at a warehouse in Iraq in 2003 which have been described as 'Britain's Abu Ghraib'... [Fusilier Gary Bartlam] was arrested in Britain in summer 2003. Staff at a photographic store in Staffordshire tipped off police after they were disturbed by so-called 'trophy snaps'... The 25 pictures are reported to show one soldier standing on an Iraqi prisoner who appears to be lying in a pool of blood. Another allegedly shows a gagged Iraqi hanging from the arms of a fork-lift truck controlled by a grinning British soldier. The prisoner is cut down and shown falling heavily. Others are reported to show a soldier preparing to kick the head of an Iraqi lying on the ground. Others are alleged to show Iraqis being forced to perform sexual acts with each other and on a soldier."

"Thomas Grimm, a former assistant principal at Kerkstra Middle School in Oak Forest, pleaded guilty Friday to sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy in his office... Grimm answered the judge's questions in a quiet voice, admitting that he directed the child to perform oral sex on him while the boy was in his office on a disciplinary matter in May 2003. The boy recorded the incident on an audiotape recorder that was hidden in his pocket. Grimm told police that it was his voice on the tape, Moreland said. Principal allegedly faked gang beating
Lexington Dispatch | Submitted by: Reid Fleming

Grateful Indonesians still hate America
Wire Services | Submitted by: Mux King
"As Secretary of State Colin Powell visited Sumatra island Wednesday, survivors, aid workers and others expressed gratitude for American aid... A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center last year found that 83% of Indonesians had unfavorable opinions of the United States and that a majority preferred Osama bin Laden and Yasser Arafat to President Bush... 'I would take aid from the United States or even the devil himself if it would mean getting those people on (Sumatra's) western coast some medicine and food,' said Anton Hermawan, a doctor from the Indonesian Red Crescent... Hilmy Bakar, spokesman of the Islamic Defender Front, which is conducting its own aid mission, said he was keeping a close eye on the Americans. 'It's OK that aid from the United States is here,' he said. 'If they open bars, sell alcohol or open prostitution centers, then we will fight them.'"

ACLU upset over DNA collection drive
CNN | Submitted by: Oobatz
"Police have gathered DNA samples from hundreds of men in Truro in a renewed effort to solve the January 2002 slaying of Christa Worthington... Worthington had sex shortly before her death, but despite the semen samples, police have not been able to figure out who the man was. 'The mass collection of DNA samples by the police is a serious intrusion on personal privacy that has proven to be both ineffective and wasteful,' said the letter from ACLU Executive director Carol Rose and John Reinstein, the organization's legal director. The letter raised concerns about statements from O'Keefe, who indicated that investigators would take note of those who decline a swab of the inside of their mouths."

Supreme Court tells Traficant to fuck off
WEWS-TV 5 Cleveland | Submitted by: Reid Fleming

Traficant's lawyer had argued that he was tried twice for the same crimes - by federal prosecutors and the U.S. House of Representatives... He was convicted of accepting gifts and services from Youngstown-area businessmen in return for his political help, and for taking kickbacks from staff."

Vatican crime rate 106% per capita

"Some 90% of crimes committed inside Vatican City - nearly all of them petty thefts, pickpocketing and vandalism - go unpunished. Most of the crimes take place among tourists in St Peter's Basilica, St Peter's Square and the Vatican Museums. Some 90% of the perpetrators are never identified or found, Nicola Picardi, a sort of justice minister for Vatican City, said at a ceremony on Saturday opening the judicial year... Many of those who do get nabbed usually don't face charges because of the bureaucratic complications regarding foreign citizens."

Granny mistakes superglue for eyedrops
Queensland Sunday Mail | Submitted by: Sniffy
"Terry Horder got the fright of her life when she accidentally stuck her eyes shut with super-strength glue. The 78-year-old Wurtulla resident was defrosting the fridge when her eyes started watering and she reached for a bottle of allergy eye drops. But instead of grabbing the medicated drops she got Loctite 401 instant glue. The powerful adhesive was being kept in the fridge to avoid heat damage. 'That second my eyes were glued shut and I realised the glue was next to the drops in the fridge,' Mrs Horder said... 'There was a pool of glue against the eyeball itself but lucky it couldn't dry because of the water on the eye.'"

Rodeo fans nearly lynch Ali G
Roanoke Times | Submitted by: Rhett NF
"Introduced as Boraq Sagdiyev from Kazakhstan, he was said to be an immigrant touring America... Speaking in broken English, the mysterious man first told the decidedly pro-American crowd - it was a rodeo, of all things, in Salem, of all places - that he supported the war on terrorism. 'I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards... And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq.' ... Then the man took off his hat and sang what he said was his native national anthem. He then told the crowd to be seated, put his hat back on, and launched into a butchered version of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' that ended with the words 'your home in the grave.' ... 'If he had been out there a minute longer, I think somebody would have shot him,' [radio DJ Robynn Jaymes] said."

Disguised as anniversary or celebratory parties, the get-togethers are attended by people aged between 16 and 28 and are always billed as overnight parties. The mainly birthday, graduation and relationship anniversaries are mainly made up of old schoolmates, new friends, latest boyfriends or girlfriends... Police say there is little they can do about the issue since the parties are private and are held in private houses."

Marine jailed for finding Jesus
Washington Times | Submitted by: David Koresh
"Seventh-day Adventists are criticizing the Marine Corps for sentencing a Marine to seven months in prison for refusing to bear arms after undergoing a religious conversion. Adventist officials recently enlisted the help of two members of Congress - Rep. Dale E. Kildee, Michigan Democrat, and Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett, Maryland Republican - in demanding an explanation of why Marine Cpl. Joel D. Klimkewicz, 24, of Birch Run, Mich., was given the lengthy sentence... he had volunteered for two separate deployments in which he would help clear land mines in Iraq, a task that would not require him to carry a weapon or kill anyone... However, Pvt. Klimkewicz was charged with 'disobeying a lawful order' to carry a weapon."

GOP rewrites Article I, Section 5
Boston Herald | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The U.S. House has passed a controversial doomsday provision that would allow a handful of lawmakers to run Congress if a terrorist attack or major disaster killed or incapacitated large numbers of congressmen. 'I think (the new rule) is terrible in a whole host of ways - first, I think it's unconstitutional,' said Norm Ornstein... Usually, 218 lawmakers - a majority of the 435 members of Congress - are required to conduct House business, such as passing laws or declaring war. But under the new rule, a majority of living congressmen no longer will be needed to do business under 'catastrophic circumstances.' Instead, a majority of the congressmen able to show up at the House would be enough to conduct business, conceivably a dozen lawmakers or less."
