DWI suspect allegedly drunk on mouthwash
Wire Services | Submitted by: Tiffany B
"A woman who admitted drinking three glasses of Listerine mouthwash had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit when she was arrested for drunken driving, police said Friday... [Carol A. Ries] showed signs of intoxication after her car rear-ended another vehicle Sunday, [Sgt. Mike Shadbolt] said. She told police she had not consumed any alcohol and also passed a Breathalyzer test, but 'there was something not quite right about her,' Shadbolt said. She failed a second test using different equipment and, under further questioning, admitted to drinking three glasses of Listerine earlier in the day, Shadbolt said. According to Listerine manufacturer Pfizer Inc.'s Web site, original formula Listerine contains 26.9% alcohol." [Listerine is 54 proof? That would mean she allegedly drank the equivalent of one glass of Bacardi 151.]

Principal's exercise in censorship backfires
WXIA-TV 11 Atlanta | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Berkmar High School students opened the school newspaper to a blank editorial page after the school's principal ordered the staff to yank two opinion pieces about a new club for straight and gay teens. Gwinnett County school officials said Principal Kendall Johnson told the staff to remove the editorials because he felt it would disturb students during exam time... Liberty editor L'Anita Weiler, 18, said, 'I had a feeling it was going to be censored.' Weiler and student copy editor Kelly Shaul, 17, distributed copies of the editorials to Berkmar students after the paper was published. The pair provided copies of the editorials to the media Friday. 'We wanted to run a censored stamp on the page. But Mr. Johnson censored our 'censored' stamp, which is pointless.'"

Park worker shrugs off toilet peepholes
St. Petersburg Times | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"[Melody Davis] realized the two pits in the pale blue panels were not natural marks. They were peepholes. 'They were carved,' said Davis, who went back into the stall and stood on the toilet to get a closer look... Then the two women saw the locked door to the tiny park office between the bathrooms. 'That's when my heart sank,' Davis said, 'because I knew it was a county employee that had done it.' ... The women said they complained to a parks worker Thursday after discovering the holes. 'He said, "I don't usually work at this park,"' Davis said. 'Not, "Oh, my God," or "Where are they?" or "Let's go see." He was not shocked at all.' ... At one point the sandy beach had a seedy side. About a dozen men were arrested in a series of undercover stings at the park in 1997, after the Sheriff's Office received complaints of men engaging in sex at county parks."

Judge allegedly played favorites with child custody
New York Post | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The FBI is investigating allegations that heiress and alleged welfare cheat Linda Jacobs was pals with the judge who gave her custody of her two sons. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Marylin Diamond awarded Jacobs custody of her teen sons, Jason and Jeffrey, in 1999 - even though the boys told a court-appointed shrink that their mom beat and abused them. Diamond ignored those claims and their pleas to live with their father, Gary Jacobs, due to her friendship with their mother, according to the boys and the father... Jacobs said the two women both had manicures at Vogue around 5:30 p.m. on July 22 - the night before the case was due back in Family Court... records obtained by The Post show that Diamond - who had not presided on the case in five years - personally requested the Jacobs case file April 13, six weeks before Linda Jacobs filed a petition in Family Court asking that Gary be ordered to make support payments."

Ananova | Submitted by: Leggy Mountbattan
"[Professor Ronald Jurisch] said he had gone to see a doctor at a hospital in San Jose because his left foot was swollen. He said: 'An aspirin usually did the trick. I have had the problem before - it was nothing serious - just something caused by my diabetes. 'When I got to the hospital they put me on a bed and I heard the word amputate. I tried to protest, but before I knew it they had given me drugs to black me out, and when I woke up I was at the departure lounge. My suitcases were by my side - and then I realised my leg was missing. I couldn't move, and when I checked my wallet I found that $375 had been taken out and replaced with a receipt for the amputation.'"
