Wire Services | Submitted by: CaptainSquanto
"Between Aug. 18 and Aug. 26, the 23 detainees tried to hang or strangle themselves with pieces of clothing and other items in their cells... Ten detainees made a mass attempt on Aug. 22 alone... Those incidents were mentioned casually during a visit earlier this month by three journalists, but officials then immediately denied there had been a mass suicide attempt. 84.6% of Japanese pupils grok death concept
Japan Today | Submitted by: Cagehead
"15.4% of Nagasaki Prefecture primary and junior high school students believe dead people can be resurrected. As to why they believe this, half said it is because they have seen stories about resurrection on television or read them in books. The survey was conducted in November and December, following the killing of a student by an 11-year-old girl in Sasebo in the prefecture in June and a subsequent note issued by a family court that said the girl had only a vague notion of death."

Supreme Court dooms Terri Schiavo, finally
KGTV-TV 10 San Diego | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"The Supreme Court refused Monday to reinstate a Florida law passed to keep a severely brain-damaged woman hooked to a feeding tube, clearing the way for it to be removed... The Florida Supreme Court had struck down the law last fall, and the justices were the last hope for state leaders who defended the law in a bitter long running dispute over the fate of Terri Schiavo... 'It's judicial homicide. They want to murder her,' her father, Robert Schindler, said Monday. 'I have no idea what the next step will be. We're going to fight for her as much as we can fight for her.'" [Which is the step that comes after the Supreme Court telling you to fuck off?]

Man rescued after month in mushroom cave
BBC | Submitted by: CaptainSquanto
"A man who went missing five weeks ago in south-western France has been found alive in an underground cave system where he had got lost. Jean-Luc Josuat-Verges, 48, told police he survived by eating wood and clay... Mr Josuat-Verges left his home on 18 December suffering from depression and telling his wife he wanted to be alone for a time, local newspapers said. Taking a bottle of whisky he drove his jeep to an abandoned mushroom farm consisting of a vast network of underground tunnels. But in the pitch blackness he got lost and for the next 35 days he had to survive as he could... teenagers, taking advantage of a teachers' strike, went to explore the underground galleries which are supposed to be out of bounds to the public. Seeing the man's jeep, they alerted the police who eventually found him on Friday."

Nutball priest, 52, marries girl, 10
Canoe | Submitted by: Becca
"A man who married a girl when she was 10 said Wednesday he did nothing illegal... The man, who is now 52, said outside court that current laws make it possible to marry anyone - 'even a baby' - because there is no minimum age... He said the federal common law originated with the Romans about 2,000 years ago, was transferred to England and France and then made its way to Canada... He has acknowledged that Quebec law set the marriage age at 16 in 2001 but maintains the amendment doesn't apply to him because he had already wed the girl... Asked by reporters if he thinks it's right for a man to marry a woman 40 years younger, the man replied: 'I would say it's none of your business.'" [And we would say you're a sick perv.]

Tsunami snuff videos abound
KGTV-TV 10 San Diego | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"Pushing aside pirated Bollywood movies, new releases are ruling the black market video charts: compilations of grisly pictures and videos of the tsunami horror... Police in the Thai resort town of Phuket arrested a man for selling video CDs of the disaster, where sidewalk vendors have been peddling video CDs of the tsunami for about $2.60... At one point, a man - apparently drowning - can be seen trying to cling to a bridge as waves wash over him. In another section, the bloated body of a child is levered into a grave by a group of policemen... The disc includes a rambling message in Malay that scrolls down the screen, saying the disaster was a warning from Allah because people were ignoring His teachings." [Yeah, yeah, yeah. Especially all of those disobedient babies and unborn fetuses.]

Objectivists not making friends
Orange County Weekly | Submitted by: juanholmes
"You may know Ayn Rand for her lugubrious, stultifying novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged... since the end of the Cold War and the concurrent demise of the global-communist conspiracy, [the Ayn Rand Institute] and its Randian followers have been struggling for a new bugaboo to replace socialism as the chief enemy of 'reason, rational self-interest, individual rights and free-market capitalism.' ... On Dec. 30, ARI sent out an unsolicited opinion piece on the Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 250,000 people in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India four days earlier. Entitled 'U.S. Should Not Help Tsunami Victims,' the article stated that while private citizens had every right to donate cash, government-financed aid amounted to theft."

Russian pols not making Jewish friends
Wire Services | Submitted by: suicide_nation
"A group of nationalist Russian lawmakers called Monday for a sweeping investigation aimed at outlawing all Jewish organizations and punishing officials who support them, accusing Jews of fomenting ethnic hatred and saying they provoke anti-Semitism... The stunning call to ban all Jewish groups raised concerns of persistent anti-Semitism in Russia. Jewish leaders have praised President Vladimir Putin's government for encouraging religious tolerance, but rights groups accuse the authorities of failing to prosecute the perpetrators of anti-Semitic and racial violence."
