Hundreds of pilgrims crushed, burned in stampede
BBC | Submitted by: smoke weed everyday
"Up to 300 Hindu pilgrims are feared dead and hundreds injured during a stampede at a Hindu festival in India... Officials say thousands panicked during a religious procession after a fire broke out in roadside stalls. Many pilgrims were crushed and burned to death as the fire forced crowds into a narrow stairway leading to the hilltop temple... One local police inspector blamed a fire caused by an electrical short circuit in a makeshift shop. Other witnesses said pilgrims began burning and looting roadside stalls after they became frustrated at long delays in gaining entry to the temple site."

Tennessean | Submitted by: tamelatn
"Murfreesboro police say a 19-year-old Murfreesboro woman, who was assaulted while walking to her car, did everything right while fleeing her attacker... The woman was approached just after 6 p.m., as she left the Kohl's department store after work Saturday night, according to police reports. An unidentified white man chased the woman to her car. After she'd opened her car door, he brandished a box cutter and demanded that she give him her underwear. Nguyen was arrested after the collision. The driver of the vehicle, Jessica Welch, 15, suffered lung injuries, a ruptured spleen and injuries to her pelvis and collar bone in the crash... Dead baby separated from recyclables
WKMG-TV 6 Orlando | Submitted by: B DIDDY
"A worker sorting trash found a dead newborn on a conveyor belt at the Palm Beach County recycling center, police said. Employees discovered the naked infant while separating metal and aluminum recyclables shortly after 9 p.m. Monday. There was no blanket, bag or other evidence found with the body that could help to identify him, Detective Charles Reed said. Reed estimated that the baby was between a day and a week old. The body was intact, but 'it was not in the best of condition,' Reed said. 'It was mixed in with all the trash.' The infant could have come from anywhere in the county. More than 3,000 tons of trash are dumped daily at the facility."

Company fires unrepentant smokers
WRAL-TV 5 Raleigh | Submitted by: Little Red
"Four employees of Okemos-based health benefits administrator Weyco Inc. have been fired for refusing to take a test that would determine whether they smoke cigarettes. The company instituted a policy on Jan. 1 that makes it a firing offense to smoke - even if done after business hours or at home, the Lansing State Journal reported Monday. Weyco founder Howard Weyers said previously that he instituted the tough anti-smoking rule to shield his company from high health care costs. 'I don't want to pay for the results of smoking,' he said." [What's next -- Obesity? Alcohol? Unsafe sexual practices?]

Nearly 70% of Hispanics were charged with felonies in 2003... a spokesman for Attorney General Bill Lockyer said his office is taking no position on the results of its study, just presenting the statistics to the Legislature, as required."

Final warning on global warming crisis
CNN | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"'An ecological time-bomb is ticking away,' said Stephen Byers, who co-chaired the task force with U.S. Republican Senator Olympia Snowe, and is a close confidant of British Prime Minister Tony Blair. 'World leaders need to recognize that climate change is the single most important long term issue that the planet faces.' ... U.S. President George W. Bush has rejected the Kyoto accord, arguing that the carbon emission cuts it demands would damage the U.S. economy... The task force urges all G-8 countries to agree to generate a quarter of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025 and to shift agricultural subsidies from food crops to biofuels."
