Retrial scheduled in Haidl case
Wire Services | Submitted by: Ozzwepay
"The highly anticipated retrial of three teens accused of gang-raping a 16-year-old girl at a Newport Beach, Calif., party is set to begin almost seven months after the first trial ended with a deadlocked jury... On July 5, 2002, 17-year-olds Gregory Haidl, Kyle Nachreiner and Keith Spann videotaped the girl, referred in court only as 'Jane Doe,' while they shoved a pool stick, Snapple bottle, and a lit cigarette into her genitals as they laughed and danced around her... [District Attorney Chuck Middleton] said the defense twisted the alleged victim's words in the first trial by claiming she was an 'aspiring porn star.'"

Action figure threatened with decapitation
CNN | Submitted by: BurningBush
"A photograph posted on an Islamist Web site appears to be that of an action figure and not a U.S. soldier being held hostage. Liam Cusack, the marketing coordinator for Dragon Models USA, said the figure pictured on the Web site is believed to be 'Special Ops Cody,' a military action figure the company manufactured in late 2003... On the Islamist Web site, a group calling itself the Al Mujahedeen Brigade, posted a photograph of a man it claimed was a captured U.S. soldier named John Adam, and it threatened to behead him if Iraqi prisoners are not released by U.S. forces. Staff Sgt. Nick Minecci of the U.S. military's press office in Baghdad told The Associated Press that 'no units have reported anyone missing.' The photograph showed the figure against a black flag with white lettering reading, 'God is great, there is no god but Allah.' A U.S. military assault rifle was pointed at its head. It appears that 'rifle' was part of the plastic weaponry that came with the action figure."

Dispatches sent two trained nurses equipped with hidden cameras into the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and Ealing Hospital in London... In one scene, a porter wheels a patient through a hospital. But the nurses have forgotten to tell the porter his patient is infected with the potentially deadly superbug MRSA and their failure has helped spread the disease."

Good samaritans busted for pot possession
KMGH-TV 7 Denver | Submitted by: Kaiser Wilhelm
"The trio was driving on U.S. Highway 36 from Estes Park, Colo., on the evening of Jan. 26, when they spotted an injured animal in the middle of the road near Pinewood Springs. 'It looked up as if to say, "Help me,"' Jason Lee Laird told the Boulder Daily Camera. The three men decided to rescue the animal so that it wouldn't be hit by another car, and take it to a 24-hour veterinary clinic in Longmont... One of the men sat in the back seat and stroked the animal to reassure it as they drove toward Longmont. They stopped in the next town, ironically called Lyons, and flagged down a Boulder County sheriff's deputy... The deputy told the men that he smelled marijuana in the Jeep... Laird, 21, and Zachariah Deming, 19, were ticketed for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The injured mountain lion, which wildlife officers guessed was four or five months old, had to be euthanized." [PETA and NORML ought to split the fine.]
