Arab hunter gets 25 years
The Australian | Submitted by: heystoopid
"A French truck driver who fired at French Arabs for sport because he considered them 'sub-human' has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for murdering a teenager and for 16 attempted murders. Joel Damman, 50, admitted to the court in Douai, northern France, that he roamed the streets of nearby Dunkirk seeking Arab-looking individuals while believing he was 'off for a day's hunting'. He wore dark hunter's garb, a cap and dark sunglasses and covered up the number plate on his vehicle, before taking pot-shots when he came across individuals from France's large Arab immigrant community, he said. On October 4, 2002, he shot and killed a 17-year-old boy of north African origin, Mohamed Maghara, and wounded three other people who had been standing around in front of two cafes."

[Christopher Dowling] was arrested in November and charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and simple assault. Police said Dowling, who is suspended from the police force, handcuffed his girlfriend's hands behind her back, put an unlit M-80 firecracker in her vagina, repeatedly hit her with a tire iron and placed a 30-pound safe on her chest. The assault began, the woman said, when he caught her lying about smoking cigarettes."

Possible Rumsfeld arrest warrant on Abu Ghraib charges
Reuters | Submitted by: fushuugi
"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday he has not decided whether to attend an international security conference next week in Germany, where he might be subject to arrest on a war-crimes complaint. 'I have not made a final decision on that. And there are several factors,' Rumsfeld told reporters when asked if he would go to the prestigious annual private Munich Conference on Security Policy Feb. 12-13 when he is in Europe next week. He conceded in response to questions at a press conference that one problem was the jurisdiction of a German court over a 160-page criminal complaint filed Nov. 30 with the federal prosecutor's office in Germany accusing him of war crimes in connection with detainee abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq... The complaint also names other senior U.S. military authorities, including former U.S. commander in Iraq Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, and former U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet."

Enron audiotapes imply outright criminality
CNN | Submitted by: Bog
"A Washington state utility released audiotapes Thursday that it said revealed bankrupt energy trader Enron Corp. plotted to take a power plant off-line in 2001 to jack up electric prices in Western states. That same day, shortages of power forced rolling blackouts in northern California that affected about 2 million customers... [The Snohomish Public Utility District] says an Enron employee and a worker at a power plant in Las Vegas, Nevada, made up phony repairs, taking the plant off-line January 17, 2001. 'We want you guys to get a little creative... and come up with a reason to go down,' the Enron worker tells the plant employee on one of the tapes. 'Anything you want to do over there? ... Cleaning, anything like that?' the Enron employee says. 'Yeah, yeah,' the other replies. 'There's some stuff we could be doing.' ... 23 of Enron's executives - including former CEOs Jeff Skilling and Ken Lay - have been brought up on federal charges related to its collapse."

Cops allegedly juicing
Officer.com | Submitted by: Richard Smoker
"As a brand-new police officer, Chris Holden wanted to do everything he could to protect himself, especially after he heard about a highway patrolman who was shot to death in a struggle over his gun... Now Holden, 31, is out of work, one of four members of the Norman Police Department who were fired last fall after being accused of using bodybuilding steroids. Police officers in Mississippi, Ohio, Connecticut, Hawaii, Colorado, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas and New York have also been accused of steroid-related offenses in recent years... A former Riverdale, Ga., police officer who received a life sentence in 1995 for the slaying of a bar owner, and an Oregon jail guard who received a 20-year sentence in 1986 for kidnapping, shooting and paralyzing a woman both claimed steroid use contributed to their behavior."

No charges filed in LAPD flashlight beating incident
Sacramento Bee | Submitted by: jcool_83
"After a five-month review, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge Officer John Hatfield, who struck Stanley Miller 11 times with a 2-pound steel flashlight after a chase in South Los Angeles on June 23. Because of Miller's attempt to elude police, the ensuing struggle and the possibility that he was armed, 'we cannot establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Officer Hatfield's actions were without legal necessity,' Deputy District Attorney Margo Baxter said in a report... Videotape taken by news helicopters showed Miller, who is black, being beaten on the ground after he appeared to surrender."

Police dispatcher receives unusual deference
KSTP-TV 5 Minneapolis | Submitted by: Oobatz
"Police reports say [Michelle Sutherland] was drunk when she crossed the center line on Highway 70 just outside Spooner, Wisconsin crashing into the vehicle [Sara Summer] was a passenger in. Summer's only 26 and has to use a walker now to get around. The crash crushed her pelvis and lacerated her liver... Sutherland is a State Patrol Dispatcher. And her husband is a deputy in the county where she was arrested... even though officers say they smelled alcohol and noticed Sutherland's slurred speech and glassy eyes, they did not give her a field sobriety test in the field. Rather waited until an hour later at the hospital. When the officer asked her to count down, reports show she said, '53, 52, 51, 51...' She kept repeating the numbers. And her blood test measured a 0.19. We've also learned that before carting Sutherland off to jail two officers allowed her to make a stop at home to check on her 14 year old son."

"Mourners at a funeral were left terrified when a massive block of frozen urine fell from the sky. People ducked for cover when iced toilet waste the size of a portable television hurtled down as they were leaving the church. The lump of ice smashed into the building as around 50 mourners were standing outside and narrowly missed them as it scattered across the ground. It is believed to have come from an aeroplane that was passing overhead... A spokeswoman for National Air Traffic Services confirmed the ice may have been caused by toilet waste."
