Baby evidently beaten almost to death
KPRC-TV 2 Houston | Submitted by: Ruddy Kitty
"[Ivan Castaneda, 21, and Donna Marie Norman, 19] were taken in for questioning Wednesday after Texas Children's Hospital workers notified police that their [6-month-old] daughter showed signs of abuse and sexual assault... 'This is the worst case of abuse that I've personally seen,' Houston Police Department Sgt. Randy Upton said. 'She had some skull fractures, brain contusions, hemorrhaging, liver injuries, lung and kidney problems, signs of sexual abuse, as well as a severe laceration across her tongue.' Doctors found more injuries upon closer examination. 'In addition to all the internal injuries she had, she also had two broken legs and a broken arm and a broken vertebrae,' said Estella Olquin, with Child Protective Services... Castaneda was previously charged with injury to a child in connection with alleged abuse against the 15-month-old daughter; however, the case was dismissed in August 2004."

Shanley convicted of raping altar boy
BBC | Submitted by: the catholic love boat
"A court in the United States has convicted defrocked Roman Catholic priest Paul Shanley of raping a boy at a Massachusetts church in the 1980s. The victim, now 27, lowered his head as the verdicts were read out in the Cambridge court on four charges including rape and fondling... Shanley has been accused of abusing dozens of other alleged victims in civil lawsuits. In September 2003, the archdiocese of Boston agreed to pay $85m to settle more than 500 civil suits accusing priests of sexual abuse and church officials of covering up the scandal. Accusations have been levelled at some 200 priests and a cardinal, Archbishop Bernard Law, resigned over the scandal."

Ponzi scheme preacher cons 1,600 churches
ABC News | Submitted by: FIRESTAR
"A preacher was convicted Monday of stealing nearly $9M from hundreds of small, black churches across the country by promising them big returns on small investments. Abraham Kennard was found guilty by a federal jury in Rome on 116 counts, including fraud and evasion. Prosecutors said he ran a pyramid scheme that took advantage of the tight network of black preachers to which he belonged... 'It's not a law against riding in a Cadillac if you don't want to ride in a Volkswagen,' Kennard, who represented himself, said in his opening remarks... Prosecutors said Kennard claimed his company was developing Christian resorts around the country. He told preachers that for a fee of a few thousand dollars, their churches could be 'members' of his company. In return, he promised that in time the churches would get a grant or a forgivable loan of up to $500,000." [Crucify Barabbas.]

Congressman kidfucker must move away from school
Daily Southtown | Submitted by: Terry from Homewood
"Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds, who resigned his legislative seat 10 years ago after being convicted of having sex with an underage campaign worker, has been ordered to leave his Chicago home because it is near an elementary school. Police gave Reynolds 30 days to move out of the house in mid-January... Authorities discovered that Reynolds was living near Salem Christian Academy when he checked in with police as part of a mandatory annual visit. New computer software identified the problem after comparing his address to nearby schools, day-care centers and playgrounds... The Chicago Democrat resigned in 1995 after being convicted of sexual misconduct with a 16-year-old campaign worker. In 1997, he was convicted of fraudulently obtaining bank loans and diverting money intended for voter registration drives into his campaign fund."

Dead boot camp kid allegedly tortured
Sacramento Bee | Submitted by: jcool_83
"The parents of a 15-year-old boy who died while attending a boot camp for troubled teens have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the facility. Roberto Reyes of Santa Rosa, Calif., died in November of a spider or insect bite, less than a week after enrolling at the Thayer Learning Center Boot Camp and Boarding School, about 60 miles north of Kansas City. The lawsuit contends the boot camp failed to treat the bite quickly enough, resulting in the teen's death. The lawsuit also claims the boy was dragged, beaten, placed in solitary confinement and 'forced to lay in his own excrement for extended periods of time.'"

Mom allegedly smokes crack, breastfeeds baby
Manchester Union Leader | Submitted by: Nerd lover
"A Manchester woman pleaded innocent yesterday to endangering the welfare of her 11-month-old daughter by breast-feeding her within 24 hours of snorting cocaine... According to court records, Randy Dorr, the 34-year-old father of the child, took the baby to the hospital and told emergency room staff that [Lisa Ireland] had been using cocaine and breast-feeding. Medical personnel told police a blood test showed the child had cocaine in her system... Ireland told the officer she was not able to use a breast pump before snorting the cocaine. She said she waited until the following day, Jan. 4, to breast-feed her daughter, which would explain how the cocaine was in the child's bloodstream."

Cremationist fired for casket lid collection
Canada.com | Submitted by: ruv you rong time
"A gusty day in Regina led to the downfall of a cremation technician and aspiring funeral director after a number of casket lids he removed and hid in his backyard were blown into an adjacent public park. The lids contained name tags identifying the person to whom the container belonged. Russell Surkan was fired from his job at the crematorium in April 2004, but it wasn't until recently that official disciplinary measures were handed down by the Funeral and Cremation Services Council of Saskatchewan (FCSCS), an independent provincial body... Surkan insists he did nothing wrong, since the lids were going to be burned anyway. He pulled them off because it made the burning process quicker."

Pentagon refining nuke warhead design
Wire Services | Submitted by: you fail me
"US scientists are quietly starting work on a new generation of nuclear arms meant to be more rugged and reliable than warheads in the existing arsenal. About $9M have been allocated so far for weapons designers at the three US nuclear weapons laboratories, the New York Times reported Monday, citing government officials and experts. The initiative is expected to grow and could produce finished designs in five to 10 years... they want to emphasize reliability and long shelf life, and design weapons that are easy to manufacture... 'The goal is to see if we can make smarter, cheaper and more easily manufactured designs that we can readily certify as safe and reliable for the indefinite future.'" [So what's the catch?]

Tsunami warning system 2.0 probably doomed
Seattle Post-Intelligencer | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"President Bush and the House and Senate have proposed plans for updating the warning system... [But] NOAA would have to cut money for some other program to pay for the tsunami system. The budget Bush is presenting today essentially freezes spending not related to defense or homeland security, meaning that an increase in one area must come at the expense of another... 'Nature is the real weapon of mass destruction,' said Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., who is drafting a tsunami protection bill. 'For less than we spend in one day in Iraq, we can have a system to prevent a cataclysmic event' that could kill tens of thousands of people."
