Alleged NAMBLAns arrested
KGTV-TV 10 San Diego | Submitted by: Lady Despair
"Phillip Todd Calvin, 43, of Dallas; David Cory Mayer, 49, of Chicago; and Paul Ernest Zipszer, 39, of Deland, Fla., surrendered without incident about 10 a.m., FBI Special Agent Jan Caldwell said. Investigators said Mayer is a psychologist who counsels sex offenders and Calvin is a dentist... A San Diego FBI agent infiltrated the North American Man/Boy Love Association, attended two meetings according to investigators, and built up trust with other members. His affiliation led to a planned trip to Mexico, where the seven men believed they would find a safe haven where they could engage in sex with underage boys. The requests were specific, including an age range of 8 to 14. The men were supposed to leave for Mexico on Saturday, but instead found themselves in a sting operation."

Another big failure for magical missile defense
Wire Services | Submitted by: CaptainSquanto
"A test of the national missile defense system failed Monday when an interceptor missile did not launch from its island base in the Pacific Ocean, the military said. It was the second failure in months for the experimental program... Previous failures of these high-profile, $85 million test launches have been regarded as significant setbacks by critics of the program. In Monday's test, the interceptor missile was to target a mock ICBM fired from Kodiak Island, Alaska. The target missile launched at 1:22 a.m. Monday EST without any problems, but the interceptor did not launch. The previous test, on Dec. 15, failed under almost identical circumstances. The target missile launched, but the interceptor did not."

Airport security misses butcher knife in handbag
CNN | Submitted by: Oobatz
"A security screener at Newark Liberty International Airport failed to spot a butcher knife in a passenger's pocketbook and was removed from the post for retraining, officials said. Katrina Bell, 27, had cleared security and was waiting with her sister to board a flight on Saturday morning when she discovered she was carrying a knife. Bell had put the knife in her bag 'just in case' before going on a blind date earlier that week, her sister and travel companion, Tikisha Bell Gowens, 30, said... 'She said to me, "Oh my God, I have this butcher knife in my pocketbook,"' Bell Gowens said. 'My first thought was, "They're going to think we're terrorists."' The North Carolina women immediately told airport personnel... 'Come on, now. We had a butcher knife. How do you miss that? How many years do you need to get this right?'" [Excellent question.]

BBC | Submitted by: servalan
"A secret underwater attraction that lured several divers to their deaths could have returned, police say. The 'gnome garden' complete with picket fence was removed from the bottom of Wastwater in the Lake District after several divers died a few years ago. It is thought they spent too much time at too great a depth while searching for the site of the ornaments. Now police divers say there is a rumour that the garden has returned at a depth beyond which they are allowed."

Poontang imported to entice gay penguins
Guardian UK | Submitted by: optional
"They are called Charley, Left-Arrow, Diagonal-Line and Six-Point. The four female penguins at Bremerhaven Zoo in Germany are at the centre of debate after being brought in to tempt 'gay' male penguins. The zoo imported the penguins from Sweden last month after finding through DNA tests that three of their five existing pairs were all male. The zoo had been mystified why its endangered Humboldt penguins had failed to breed, until they realised the males had paired off, the zoo's director Heike Kück said... But the zoo's decision to introduce females has sparked a furious response from gay and lesbian groups in Germany... 'The central question is, are our penguins really gay or is it simply a lack of opportunity?' she told Der Spiegel. 'So far the males have scarcely thrown the females a single glance. The men have had the opportunity but haven't done it. 'If the penguins really are gay then obviously they can stay gay.'"
