Campus Police Chief Is Comically Corrupt
Rocky Mountain Collegian | Submitted by: anonymous
"So if a police officer gives an informant 10 rocks of crack, and they end up in the hospital, are they responsible for it at that point? Because I could just say the police gave it to me? To the student's question, Yarbrough responded: Let me tell you what I would do: You give it to them, but you let them know that, hey, if you get caught with this, you know, don't say my name. Or if they get sick or something, I never gave them those (drugs)."

Iceland Is Burning
Huffington Post | Submitted by: ManusPubessonn
"One year ago, Iceland was named the most desirable country in the world. Today, its economy has been devastated by the catastrophic collapse of its three largest banks. Unemployment rose 45% between November and December, and a recent survey indicated that 40% of households and 70% of businesses were technically bankrupt. Since the fall of the banks in October, there have been no resignations from the government, the boards of the now nationalized banks have remained substantially the same, and weekly gatherings calling for new elections have been ignored."

Africa's Flying Toilets
IPP Media | Submitted by: BA
"Open defecation is widespread, and flying toilets, where people defecate in plastic bags and throw them away at night are the rule rather than the exception in many informal settlements. This is the way we live. We do not have toilets, and no place to safely dispose of our waste, said Nicholas Ambeyo. Because of this, and the lack of sufficient water, and the open sewers that run through our houses, we are at a risk of contracting diseases."

Exporting the Dead
SF Weekly | Submitted by: kahn
"For Lopez' family, the process of sending his body back to Mexico is yet one more irony of a country that lives on immigrant labor while refusing to give some 12 million such workers legal status. Lopez ducked authorities to get into the United States, yet his posthumous return couldn't be more official. While his existence in the United States was never legitimized by documentation, his corpse is sent back with a packet of certified state records sealed with a Hague Convention Apostille."
