New York Daily News | Submitted by: scarred 4 life

Public Prayer Forbidden In Paris
London Telegraph | Submitted by: ineverwantedit
"Praying in the streets of Paris is against the law starting Friday, after the interior minister warned that police will use force if Muslims, and those of any other faith, disobey the new rule to keep the French capital's public spaces secular... "My vigilance will be unflinching for the law to be applied. Praying in the street is not dignified for religious practice and violates the principles of secularism." In April, a ban on wearing the full Islamic veil came into force. Holland today became the third European country to ban the burka, after Belgium, despite the fact fewer than 100 Dutch women are thought to wear the face-covering Islamic dress."

Container Shipping Father Dies
Telegraph | Submitted by: ditchley
"Keith Tantlinger, who died on August 27 aged 92, developed the technology that launched containerised shipping -- in the process redrawing the global economic map by transforming the way cargo is moved internationally... The idea of transporting cargos in a sealed metal box is a simple one, and indeed containers had been in use since the 19th century to haul heavy cargo like coal. It was not the box that Tantlinger designed, but the all-important twist-locks, corner posts, cell guides, spreader bars and other paraphernalia which make it possible to lift and lower containers on and off ships and stack them safely. He patented several dozen inventions."

Hankyoreh/Cryptome | Submitted by: ditchley
"It has come to light that the National Intelligence Service has been using a technique known as “packet tapping” "deep packet inspection" to spy on emails sent and received using Gmail, Google’s email service... The fact that the NIS taps Gmail, which uses HTTP Secure, a communication protocol with reinforced security, implies that it possesses the technology to decrypt data packets transmitted via Internet lines after intercepting them."

Done Redefining Life, Now To Redefine Death
New York Daily News | Submitted by: Jesus, hurling chunks...
"Robertson's co-host, Terry Meeuwsen, quickly shot back at the former Republican presidential candidate, asking whether a couple's marriage vows -- to care for one another "for better or for worse" and "in sickness and in health" -- ought not to apply. "If you respect that vow, you say 'til death do us part,'" Robertson said, adding that Alzheimer's "is a kind of death."
